Help. Just purchased Saturn 130,000 miles on car but 45,000 on engine.
Heater wont get hot, unless eng. temp rises , blower switch will blow hard, then slower, to not at all, and there is a noise(not in beginning) sounds like a train or horn blowing. Thermostat is probably stuck open, what about the noise? How to tell if your Serp. belt tensioner is going out? Is blower belt related?

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

1-Is the coolant level, below, or above the fill line?

2-What does the temperature gauge say with a warmed up engine after 10-15 minutes? Normal needle position is approximately 3/8ths, between the first and second tick mark. If in doubt replace the thermostat with a 195F one.

3-Coolant is always circulating through the heater core; the blend door selects how much outside air is forced through the heater core as opposed to many thinking a valve is adjusting heat. Unless the heater core is thoroughly plugged from use of sealer, our cooling systems are self burping to rid itself of any air. You can feel both heater hoses for hot coolant otherwise you may have to remove the two hoses to flush the heater core manually in both directions to ensure flow.

4-If the noise is from inside the car then maybe the blower has something blocking it. Remove it to clean out any debris. Most blowers are on the passenger side. Mine (L300) is buried under the windshield cowling requiring dismantling a few items to remove it. Hopefully, yours is by the passenger side near the glove box for access.

5-Belt noise from outside and in the engine can be from anything. Leave the hood open and listen with the engine idling. Our drive belts use a spring loaded belt tensioner to maintain belt tension. Approximately 50lbs is needed to deflect the belt between pulleys.

No, I think you're hearing the ABS cycling.

Went to replace thermostat and found only an o-ring under the housing! That explains a lot!
Listened to motor to determine where the high pitch whine was coming from and it was the puller fan!
It was coming on the minute you start the engine and never turning off.
So after thermostat was in place ran engine and it ran all the way to 3/4 hot, fan was still running, so I followed a fellow Saturn owners advice and pulled the negative cable off the battery for 10 minutes, disconnected the fan pulled up the Fan control module, and tapped it gently on the chassis. Reconnected everything, ran engine, seems fine. Will update later after driving vehicle.
Definitely stopped the noise!

Fan for a/c heater still works then doesn't work, hits a bump works for a second, then doesn't, sometimes not at all.
Going to run some test on blower and heater core hoses later.
Good Luck all and Thanks so much!

For the fan to work as intermittently as you described, it may be a burned ground wire. You'll have to trace the blower wiring back to separate the hot wire from the ground one. Ground may disappear as others have found; using a multimeter to trace voltage.

After replacing thermostat from auto zone, changing oil with max life, good oil filter, cabin air filter, and air filter.
Car still almost red lining, but puller fan does not come on until halfway mark, and continues to run for a few minutes after turning off engine.
upon opening the cowl looking for cabin air filter, found old one had been half chewed up and used as a nest for rats! Vacuumed out loose particles and lots of rat droppings, yuck!
Heater works good now if the speed switch for the fan worked I'd be a happy camper.
Taking your advice, especially now I know rats have lived in and chewed on other parts, and going to check that ground wire.
Thanks for the help, I really apprec.

Have you left a few traps out for the mice? Just in case one is still around (Deep in the vehicle... next to the bad ground wire) or wants to come in for the winter?

I really think they might have been residents at the place I bought the car at.
There were droppings in the floor board day I brought it home, however that a pretty good idea where I live.
