Default Saturn Aura XE 2007 with Radiator Leak

Took my Saturn Aura XE '07 into my local GM Dealer to check on a fluid leak.

Saw pink Dex-Cool like fluid on garage floor and low coolant in surge tank (whatever overflow tank is called in engine compartment).

Thought it might be water pump (would be covered by warranty) but was told it was a slight leak in the radiator and maybe the hose also. Not bad but needs repair.

Received quote of $750 to replace the radiator. I complained, nicely, since I've never had a car with low mileage and a radiator leak. Dealer called me back and said that "I talked with my Manager and we can do it for $150". Well, I'm happy with that but it does make me wonder why they came down so fast.

This car is just under 4 years and 31,000k. Just wondering
1) Is this a common GM / Saturn Aura '07 problem,
2) Even though it is just out of warranty by time, might GM honor warranty to help me and dealer out,
3) Only warranty replacement on this car was the a/c compressor 1 year ago, could replacing the compressor damaged the radiator,
4) Had oil changed at local Firestone like 1,000 miles ago. Can changing oil on this model have mechanic come near the radiator with any tools?

Besides the coolant being just at the bottom of the plastic surge/overflow tank, color is pink, not muddy, and looks fine.

Any suggestions.

Most modern vehicle radiators have plastic end tanks and can fail in this area.

If they're only charging you $175, then thats not too bad. You can pick up a replacement for $128.

Did they actually show you where it was leaking?

Like Mike said, you're getting the R&R for about the cost of the part. I'd say they are treating you pretty well. As an aside, I really hate plastic radiators.

You are absolutely sure it's over 36 months old?
You can easily find most coolant leaks yourself for about 13 bucks with coolant dye & a cheap black light.

Hey, thanks for the reply.

1) Yes, I'm out of warranty since I'm almost at 4 years although only 31K miles. Usually wouldn't want the water pump to be the problem but that would have been covered in the Drivetrain warrany.

2) I haven't tried to diagnose the problem myself yet. But I asked the dealer if it was okay to drive for now and they said yes but do the service ASAP.

3) I've just never had a radiator problem at low mileage so I was kinda of upset although I understand that these things can happen.

I'm not saying that they didn't give me a "good" deal on replacing the Radiator for $175. Just makes you think hard about why they dropped so fast from $750 to $175 if you know what I mean.

Was just wondering if if was worth calling GM Cares Hotline to see if they would cover this under warranty?

Oh, and no, they didn't show me where the leak was but just told me there was a leak in the radiator and possibly in the coolant hose.

To tell you the truth, I really should clean off the hose myself and see if it is "just" the hose and not really the radiator. What do you guys think?

Thats what I would do. I wouldn't take their word for it. I'd want to physcially see it leaking for myself.

Hey, guessing the dealer knows what they're doing but checking out a leak around a hose isn't that difficult. I'll just clean it off and make sure myself.

Thanks for the help and suggestions.

From what I have read, since my Aura XE '07 use Dex-Cool, you shouldn't mix anything else with it including Stop Leak Products.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Mike - would the dyes you mentioned be safe to mix with GM's Dex-Cool?

Looks like they might use a dex-cool proprietary dye. Probably costs more. --Not Mike
