I have to say I don't know much about automatics, but if it were my car, I would drain some of the ATF, about a 1/2 qt? Not 100% positive, but I think the owner's manual says the ATF should be at the halfway mark. This is something that you might be able to do yourself at home, if you are inclined. Or if you are near time to replace the ATF/filter, do that and replace with the correct amount.

I'd also jack the front of the car up, put it on jackstands, and look for anything loose or missing bolts (or shiney, indication something rubbing). It doesn't matter if you don't recognize what the bits are, you're just looking for empty holes and such indicating missing bolts. Or grab pieces and see if they are loose.

Can you replicate the vibration at all with the car in Park or Neutral, foot on brake, with the engine rpm at the same speed it is while in Drive?

Quote:
But recently a used car dealer (with an '01 SL2 on his lot) and then a Saturn mechanic each told me that vibration in drive at a stop was common in my particular model
Ah, yes, the old "they all do that"(which usually means "I ain't fixin' it) - definitely in the Top Ten, along with "only driven by a little old lady on Sundays, traded in for a new car" (it was abused but looks nice and I got it cheap at an auction) and "it was like that when you left the car here" (we busted it but ain't payin' for it)

in any case, we don't take kindly to those Asian appliances (see the MANY rants in the off-topic section started by twiztedsanity, XRL, ohiovueboy, and others...)

I'll try draining some. The trans. fluid and filter change are very recent, so just draining would be the way to go at this time.

Both shops (local and Chevy) said they did that - yeah, I know, who can you trust?

I actually found that a persistent squeaking sound from the right front of the car was actually inside the dashboard by pressing on different areas inside the glove box. I had been thinking that it was one of the pulleys on the engine, but it was just a rubbing of something in the dash. I just punched really hard inside the glove box and it has stopped squeaking ever since - two months of quiet there so far. (Eastern Euro mechanic technique?) This is where a drop in quality from '95 to '01 seemed so apparent to me. The inner dash felt "cheaper" than my '95 (which NEVER squeaked, by the way).

No. The vibration only occurs when stopped in Drive at the usual idle of about 750-800 rpm. In neutral, park, and in reverse, almost no vibration. And as I mentioned above, no vibration if stopped in Drive at 1500 rpm!

I'll report back if the trans. fluid drainage works.

Thanks so much for your time, alordofchaos.

I am not trying to talk smack about Saturn, but Japanese is the way to go if you want refinement and a vehicle that still feels/drives like new even after it gets old and accumulates a lot of miles. Well, I dont have experience with anything other than Toyota, but pretty sure you also cant go wrong with Honda. Havent heard too many good things about Nissan.

lol. When I bought the first Saturn and joined this forum, I was ending a memorable chapter in my life. Third generation Firebirds and Camaros will always have a special place in my heart.

It's not a big deal. I have always owned Japanese cars (before I bought a Saturn) and I've always liked them too. They are definitely built better, but I still love my Saturn. I drove my Maxima today, and afterwards I drove my Saturn. I do definitely feel more at home in the Saturn. The Nissan is a better car really in most ways, but something about the Satty is still lovable.

Either way, just own each if you can

To be fair, AoL is from a generation that came after fan belts and timing lights - those numbers in that order wouldn't mean much to him.

...and Kitt was the Mustang in a bad one-season show

(I have to admit my interest in the F-bodies came primarily from a gal I was dating; she replaced her 3rd gen Firebird with a new Trans Am and drove us everywhere)

Aww, and I just started going to school to work on cars/trucks not too long ago.. DAMN.

EDIT: I just HAD to Google the numbers in his nick.. apparently the first few hits were related to some number that's posted on the distributor cap (these days thanks to calibfornia and such it's put on the emissions sticker), so I take it that means a firing order. apparently this is the firing order for a chevy 350 engine...

My main interest was in 1988-1992 F-bodies. 4th gens were good looking cars also, faster and more refined, but too pricey and I knew the TPI system of the Thirdgens like the back of my hand.

Last F-body I owned. I miss this car a lot when I look at all the pics I have saved

..working on a 1978 Corvette right now.
Out of storage since ~1993...To make sure nothing was stuck, I removed the exhaust and filled the engine to the tippy top with 9 gallons of RotellaT.

After many bolts and some gaskets, it fired right up!
The sweet sound!

Well, as long as we're posting whatever here...here is a very recent (today) close-up of my beautiful 2001 SL2 with the "vibration in drive at a stop" problem. You can really see its gorgeous stainless wheels in this shot. IMHO, it's as beautiful as a mini-Jaguar S-type (and there's NOTHING Japanese as gorgeous as this SL2!).

Whenever I solve the above vibration problem, I plan to perfect its sound system and make it my lifelong vehicle.
