will duct tape harm car paint job?
Yesterday as advised by someone on these forums I duct tape my 96 SL2 (old gold is color of car) sunroof so it would close the whole way. Of course some of the tape was placed over parts of the roof to create a better seal and cover more area where water may leak in. Will the duct tape leave any marks or damage the paint job when I take it off a few weeks from now to get it fixed? Please help. Thanks.

As long as the paint is in good shape you should not have a problem. When you pull the tape off, do it slowly and in one direction. After you peel it off, use lacquer thinner (yes, it won't harm your paint) to remove the residus. Wash the area, then apply some wax and buff off.

It will harm your paint job. I duct taped a video camera to my last car, and the duct tape ripped the 1st layer of paint right off.

Why don't you WAX your car first... and then duct type it?

use a solution called Goo gone, get the gel formula it will take it right off...even wd-40 will take off the residue.

Try to find some gaffers tape, it has good adhesion and leaves no residue. It is very $$ though.

if your car is properly waxed then tape of any kind should not stick.
Duct tape usually has a warning on the professional packing not to leave on painted surfaces in direct sunlight. Gaffer's tape and blue 3M tape work well. Gaffer's if you want adhesion. Blue 3M if you want to mask only. Masking tape can also ruin paint. Whether or not you have had ruined paint because of it is irrelavent....many have.

Frankly, I don't think duct tape belongs on a car. Save it for babysitting.
