Default Intermittent change oil soon light

The last couple of days the change oil soon light will come on, then go off on my '03 Vue. It's not flashing really. It comes on then goes off. What is this telling me.

Does it just go on and off randomly as you drive or only at start up?

Welcome to the Board.

As mentioned already it's time to change the oil and get the oil life monitor reset.

After the oil is changed, turn the key to on but don't start the car. Press the gas pedal 5 times and then release it. Oil change light should flash then go out.nThe the key to off and then start it. Light should go out.

That's not how you reset an '03.

The '02 and '03s have a reset button in the underhood fuse box.

On the '05's, that's how it's set up. Just did it the other day when I had my oil changed. Leave to GM to change stuff around.

I like it better. Invariably, I always forget to reset the damn thing until after I have closed the hood and I have to re-open it to push the button.

My Dad's '99 GMC Sierra resets using the accelerator... GM's had it for a while... go figure.

Both, it's only been happening for a couple of days so I'm not clear on a definite pattern. It stayed on this morning when I started the car, then went off after a couple of minutes, never came back on. Yesterday and the day before, it came on randomly as I was driving.

It hasn't even been 3000 miles yet. What is it monitoring? is it strictly tied to the odometer for mileage? is there a sensor of some sort attached?

It probably wasn't reset when you last had the oil changed. Not everyone knows about the light and how to reset it.

There isn't a sensor that detects when your oil needs to be changed. The computer basically calculates the "right" time to change your oil based on the outside temperature, how many start ups, how many short trips, etc. The old 3000 mile thing is a pretty old standard and is only typically used if your vehicle goes through a lot of rough driving or dusty conditions.

Ultimately it is totally up to you when you change your oil but it is pretty clear that whoever did your last oil change did not reset the system.
