2004 VUE 3.5L
Default Misfiring all 6 cylinders!

I have a 2004 Saturn Vue AWD with the Honda 3.5 V6. It is now misfiring on all 6 cylinders. It happens at lower RPMS and will clear up any time I can hold the RPM above 2K. I have changed plugs and all of the coils look good. A local mechanic cannot figure it out and I am at wits end. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Is the check engine light on? If it's misfiring, it should be, and there should be codes stored, or if no light, there should be pending codes. And what do you mean all of the coils look good? You can't judge a coil's condition by looks. It's 13 years old after all.

Mileage, maintenance done, parts replaced? Any error code beyond P0301-P0306 (misfire in cylinders 1-6)? Fuel pressure checked? (48-56 psi)

Most vehicles are maintenance free, like batteries, but still require occasional maintenance many presume are maintenance free; cleaning throttle and maf sensor. While they're maintenance free, they get dirty and can build up hard deposits over time. Maf sensors tend to be clean since they're downstream of air filters. Throttle bodies suffer from exhaust gas and crankcase recirculation where the entire intake system eventually becomes coated in oil deposits with some behind the throttle body, hardening and sometimes disrupting idle air flow.

Just the misfire codes, P0301-P0306. When it started, I replaced the plugs since I figured it was due for a tuneup. (I bought from family last fall) It just came back from a local mechanic that tried changing the coils, but the problem persisted so he put the old ones back in. It is sitting at 218,000 miles right now. The check engine light stays on, then goes to flashing when it accelerating.

all 6 plugs and/or coils aren't all going to suddenly go bad together..

I would focus on electric gremlins.. namely the battery first.. Try getting it tested under load... and maybe disconnect it for a bit for things to reset.

A flashing check engine light means (the misfiring) unburned fuel is being burned in the catalytic converter. Catcons work on burned combustion products so fuel adds more heat. If allowed to continue, the catcons will burn out and become an expensive repair in addition to any existing problems. It won't take long to burn out and destroy catcons with misfiring. At 218k miles, even catcons age and may be a reason for misfiring if its already disintegrating internally, partially blocking exhaust flow. Banging on them may reveal rattling along with hearing marbles some hear while driving. One sure way to determine if the catcons are causing this misfiring issue; remove both upstream O2 sensors from exhaust manifold, make a soup can diverter to prevent hot exhaust gases from burning/melting anything nearby and drive. The LOUD exhaust may be annoying but if engine improvement suddenly returns, the catcons are the the problem. No improvement means the problem is elsewhere. Some states ignore emissions inspection with members replacing their catcons with a plain pipe.

I wouldn't rule out a bad batch of gas either, if it suddenly started to occur. Other areas worth investigating.. would be checking for a vacuum leak, and valve adjustment (given the high mileage).

If the valves have never been adjusted they are well past due and can cause misfires if out of adjustment.
