Default 1997 Saturn SL2 won't start....

Sometimes it'd start on one turn of the key. Sometimes 3 or 4 in rapid succession. Been doing this for months.

Now it stopped turning over completely. Tried jumping it to no avail. The engine eats oil.

Anything besides the starter I should look at before I replace the starter?

thanks in advance

The first step for a "no-crank" condition is to check the battery and battery cables, both the positive and negative. Remove the cables from the battery and inspect for corrosion. Also, check the ground cable connections at the block and frame and the positive cable connection at the starter for tightness and corrosion. Next, charge the battery and load test. If all is good, check for 12 volts at starter solenoid when the ignition is switched to "start." If the vehicles passes all these tests then it is time to replace the starter motor.

Try a rap on the starter with a board. If that cures it for this session it indicates the need for a replacement starter.

Using oil is not unusual, the question is how much - that is how miles per quart of oil. There are many threads on oil consumption.
