Default Can't put it in gear, ABS Light, Service Light On

Looking for help -- I have a 2003 Saturn L200, the car was running fine. Then went to start it and had major problems.

1. ABS light came on
2. Service light with the wrench came on
3. Can't put the car in gear
4. I can't lock the doors (from the automatic door lock on the inside of the door)

I had the car towed back to where I live. Wondering if anyone else has had this problem or knows how to fix it. I don't want to tow it to the dealer if it's going to cost thousands to fix. Could this be a BCM failure?

Thanks in advance for any help!

This may be more than one problem as ABS isn't a bcm issue and vice versa. The wrench light may be from an ABS error or something as simple as a burned out bulb. Inability to shift out of Park is bcm related.

One of the first things to do is going through all fuse panels, in the engine and cabin to be sure a fuse or two aren't blown. Another check might be the battery and whether its fully charged or already showing its age by triggering false error codes due to low voltage. Battery, battery cables and their connections.

Thanks for your help. Do you think this is something I should bring to a GMC dealer or would a Midas shop be able to fix the problem?

Neither GM nor Midas is needed to check for blown fuses unless you're not comfortable doing this, then any local shop can do this or perhaps a friend/neighbor. I would start with checking fuses to eliminate one area then move on with possible power issues.

Battery checking at home and with a multimeter is easy or any local repair garage will do. Ask for specific things for them to check instead of giving them the symptoms. Beware of unscrupulous business', including dealers, that would love to sell you anything as part of a package unless you are completely unsure of what to do. Some shops as well dealers will have diagnostic fees that may apply towards any repairs. A simple fee can become a large bill if you're not aware of tactics.

A battery can be weak or worn out if its over 4yrs old. If battery age is not known then any good auto store that sells car batteries can test a car battery whether its in the car or carried in. If you have a battery charger then you can try charging it over night for another start tomorrow. This would be a good opportunity to look over the battery connections for signs of corrosion if any and cleaning it as well as checking on loose connections.

If problems aren't related to fuses, battery, battery cables or their connections, Its difficult to comment on the 'professional' abilities of Midas or GM to diagnose and repair a problem above fuse/power issues. There are very good and very poor repair shops and I'm not capable of determining whether local business' are reputable or not.

Has this car had regular maintenance? What's mileage?

Thanks for your advice. The car has had regular maintenance, it has 97,000 miles on it, partly why I'm considering just getting a new car and not fixing it if it's something major. I'm not an expert looking under the hood, so I wouldn't really know where to start with checking things. Thanks again for your suggestions!

Not having any familiarity with car maintenance tends to make one rely on the trust of others means having a good repair shop to rely on.
