Default 2000 Saturn L200, check engine light on

I have a 2000 Saturn L200 that I posted about a few months ago. The car wasn't running right and would shudder at idle between 800-1000rpm. The check engine light came on and sent a PO340/341 OBD code to the computer (camshaft sensor/engine misfire). Turns out the coil pack was bad so I replaced it and the shudder went away and the check engine light went off. I also replaced the plugs and boots at the same time. A few days later the light came on again but the car still ran fine. I took it to the parts store and hooked it up to the reader and it again gave a PO340 code. I exchanged the coil pack because it was under warranty but the light stayed on. I've been driving it like this because the car runs fine and I still get 28-30mpg so I don't think it's anything serious. I've also noticed that the light doesn't always come on and will sometimes stay off for a few days. The car doesn't run any different during these periods. Any ideas what this could be? Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

I would suspect a possible bad cam position sensor. However, it could be it, the wiring, or the PCM itself.

Have you replaced the camshaft position sensor?

A recent check doesn't show a camshaft sensor for the 2.2L 4cyl engine. The 3.0L V6 engine uses a crankshaft and camshaft position sensor.

But could this be a crankshaft position sensor on the way out?

IMO, no. The engine runs. Period. Virtually every cps failure occurs with engine heat; the typical car drives fine then dies until some time passes, mostly for engine cool down, allowing a restart as if nothing happened. As this occurs more frequently, a post pops up.

The OP stated p0340 / p0341 codes that point to the camshaft sensor. What engine does the OP have? No camshaft sensors on the ecotec 2.2l. Are we to assume it's a 6 cylinder or did the parts store code reader give a false reading, this happens often for the p0340 code. If it is the 2.2l I would ignore this erroneous code or hook it up to the GM Scantool.

It is the 2.2L engine and you're right the car doesn't have a cam/crank position sensor so it's not that. The only code I get now when I hook it up is PO340, so the PO341 must be cleared and it doesn't feel like it's misfiring anymore anyway.

I wonder if it is a false code because it does disappear intermittently. I'm at a loss. Could this be a different sensor gone bad?

Thanks

Also, it seems like if the car sits for a few days the check engine light stays off for a while when I drive it again.

Consider the parts replaced to get the engine to run; ignition module and ignition coil pack. You had trouble in the past and it may be repeating again. The best you can do is to ensure electrical connectivity; clean electrical connections to both modules and some dielectric grease on the plug boots that connect the ignition coil pack to the plugs. Look over the wiring harness' for any possibility of a wiring break from chafing against metal, stretching from incorrect harness routing, etc..

It couldn't hurt to put in new spark plugs, if this hasn't been done since the new coil pack was installed.
