2003 VUE 2.2L
Default Thinking of buying an i4 5spd '03 Vue w/ 104k miles

Hey, so looking like I might be owning another Saturn soon and have been looking at a 2003 4 cylinder 5 speed manual Vue. I've test driven it everything seems fine except for a clunking noise from the front. It makes a clunking noise going over bumps. The owner said it's the stabilizer links and that it's needs 2.... Also said they are about $100 installed each by Saturn... Does that sound correct? Is there anything else I should look out for?

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Is there a way I can tell for sure that they're stabilizer links? Also i've read that wheel bearings go often on these cars, how can i check those? Anything else I need to look out for?

Ooh and btw I'm getting it for $2250 emissions etested which I think is an amazing price.... Are they good reliable vehicles? It'll be used as my daily driver during winter and long trips during summer (I have a mustang as my primary summer car)

Default Re: Thinking of buying an i4 5spd '03 Vue w/ 104k miles

You should be pretty good with this VUE.

The noise in the front end is either the stabilizer links or the strut mounts. Both very common to be noisy. Both fairly easy to DIY.

Wheel bearings are a known weak spot, but I'm at about 7x,xxx miles on the original bearings. From my casual observations, the frequent wheel bearing failures seem to be in the rust belts. My VUE hasn't seen much, if any salt.

Another known failure is the clutch slave/master cylinder. It's an expensive repair (roughly $1200- but usually that includes a new clutch). The failures seem to be isolated to 2002 and 2003 models. My 2004 hasn't yet seen it and I don't know if I've read about other 2004's that have.

Is there anyway to know the condition of the clutch master cylinder? Looks like I will be purchasing this car and finally replacing my '92 camry that replaced my '92 SL2 3 years ago.

Ask if it's been replaced. Otherwise, it's internal to the transmission. If you want to peek at it, you'll have to pull the engine and transmission from the VUE. And even then I don't know what you could learn by looking at it.

So I have been tracking my gase mileage (with a mix of about 60% highway 40% city driving) and have been getting 25-26mpg on average. I find that amazing for such a large vehicle. Very impressed. Also had the windshield replaced for $200, and sorry about the lack of pictures my laptop seems to be down. Here is a breakdown of my gas useage so far:

Tank
April 19th fill up previous april 17th,*
515.5km over 48.6L of gas = 9.46L / 100km

April 22nd fill up 50.012L 551.9km = 9.06L / 100km

April 26th, fill up 43.656L 455.3km = 9.59L/100km*

April 29 531.2km 49.651L = 9.35L/100km*

I use an internet site to track my gas mileage:
http://www.fuelly.com/

It's nothing you can't easily do with a spreadsheet on your own, but you are helping to build a working database for different vehicles so you and other people can browse through different vehicles.
