Default Low fuel light

I have a 97 SC2, the low fuel light comes on when I put the key in and turn it and in the past when the hand got close to the E the light would come, but here lately when the hand gets close to the E the light doesn't come on like it use to, could there be something wrong. The last time I put fuel in it,it took 10.667 gallons of fuel to fill it up,which mean I had about 1.3 gals of fuel in the tank.

Next time you start your car, put it in RUN, and watch all your dashboard lights. Does the LOW FUEL light illuminate along with the rest of your dash?

also, you may not be getting the needle down to where it should be this time before the LOW FUEL light triggers..

My sl2 has always done this, the fuel light doesn't come on untill the gauge is well below the 'E'. I've never put more than about 10.6 myself (it makes me nervous to drive around with the gauge touching the needle), I think the fuel gauge may need to be recalibrated, however, I have no idea how to do this. hopefully someone here can help us out here.

You might be on to something there with the recalibrated. I went and fill my tank up today 10.791 gals that where the pump shut off at. I got in my car and started it up the hand move from the E to F,but it very touches the F.

I think it is designed to go on with a specific amount left in the tank. Don't have my owner's manual handy to say; but I am sure there is mention in there.

On our 2005 VUE; the low fuel light went on when you have 3-4 gallons of gas left. Of course the VUE has a larger fuel tank then the S-Series. Just using this as a basis of comparison.

I wish that the first gen S-Series had a low fuel light in them. I don't think the Low Fuel Light came until the 96 or 97 model year as it was anyway? Maybe it was the 95 model year that it was introduced...don't recall at the moment.

I read my owner's manual cover to cover to find this car's quirks. One of them that I noted previously is that the low fuel warning doesn't come on until approximately 1.5 gallons remaining.

Putting in 10.6 gallons when the pump clicks off doesn't necessarily mean you had 1.3 gallons remaining, as I've always read that the filler tube can add another 1/2 to 1 gallon to the tank capacity.

...Wait, what, I actually won that eBay auction? Guess I now (12/2008) own a 1998 SL2, silver, 5 spd :p 102k @ purchase, now 169k
And now (7/2010), a Craigslist 1997 SC2, white, 5 spd

I rented a macarena-era Grand Am with a low fuel light. On the way back to the rental place, the low fuel light came on, and about 1/2 mile after that the car was out of gas. That was useful.... I suppose it might be worth running the tank down once to the point the light goes on, just so you know when it does, but under normal circumstances, you should _never_ run the tank below 1/4. Think of the bottom 1/4 tank as an emergency reserve.

My '95 SC2 was built in April '95, and, from what I can tell, I've never seen a Low Fuel light come on, even though it has the 2nd-Gen dash. Where exactly is this light supposed to light up on the cluster? Thanks!

What position is everyone elses fuel needle at when full? When mine is full it reads three ticks over the F. I actually ran out of fuel one time when my needle was still a tick or two above the E and the light didnt come on. Since I owned the car ive never seen my fuel light come on. I actually filled up with 11.4 gallons once and the needle was on E but no light.

And just like everyone else, the light does illuminate when the key is in RUN.

The car came with white gauge faces so my guess would be the person messed up the gauge when they installed them. So how far above F does your gauge read when filled? Like i said, mine is pretty far up there, about three ticks. Do you think removing the cluster and adjusting the needle by hand will do anything?

I did that once on a set of Jeep gauges for my wife's Jeep, it didn't work out too well!! If these Saturn gauges are anything like these Jeep gauges, they are VERY fragile!!! If you do, be VERY CAREFUL!!

Unless it's different on the SX-2s, the '95s I've seen (including ours) has no low fuel light.

To be honest, the way these cars sip fuel I see no need for one either. It's just something that either makes you paranoid, or encourages people to let their gas run down.

It's not dependent on the model; they appeared in the 1997 model year. And indeed, as (sorta) said, except to satisfy your curiosity, you should never drive the tank so low as to turn it on anyway.

I've posted this before as well. POST shows the low fuel light. I've ever put in more than 10.6 and never run out. I didn't want to risk running the pump dry just to find out what would happen.

Now for the OT part..

MP, I actually purchased one of those to use while the AATS rebuilds the Saturn engine. It has a bonus feature though.. When the gauge gets to 1/8 and I park in my drive (fair incline) the next time I fire it up the gauge pegs to full! Drive it and, it will randomly shift between totally empty (warning bell) and full. If level, it picks a equally random point in between 1/4 & 3/4 and rises from there. Cool free gas! Ok, so I know it's a bad sender. Meh! Just says it's time to fill it up. That and the radio volume that goes UP when you try to turn it down! Older GM's.. gotta love the quirks?

I doubt my experience was related to the age of the car; it was probably less than a year old when I rented it ('97-ish). One of those deals where you pay for a tank of gas in advance, so it's better to leave it on a low/empty tank. On I-94 coming from Milw, JUST before the 30/90/94 interchange. No cell phone; Dane County Sheriff came by and called GM roadside asst. for me.
