Default Steering Problem

Greetings fellow Saturn Owners,
I'm having a problem with my steering in my 2004 Saturn Ion Quad Coupe (Std. 5 spd). The prob is... all of a sudden the steering became "stiff" and hard to turn.. also , when u do turn and let go of the wheel, it stay's turned .. u have to bring it back and it feels stiff. I have checked the tire pressure.. all ok (new tires recently) and haven't hit anything ... as in alignment. I'm aware it has Electronic Assist Steering..could there be a problem with that? I would appreciate any help with this or some advice on what it is. Thx in advance guys...

well if there was a problem with the electric steering that might explain the hard steering.

the wheel not returning to center, is that while you are rolling? If so, the caster aspect of the alignment is what helps it move back to center.

It sound like your power steering has gone out. the motors in our cars I believe are programed to enhance the "on center" feel. how fast are you going when it feels off center? call GM and NHTSA, please and add your car to the list of complaints about this issue.

Well, I took the car to the former Saturn dealership and had it looked at...
The problem was the intermediate steering column was seized. I had to replace the column at a cost of $495 total, so I asked if this was a common problem and he said "when u get an oil change, have the tech's lube the u-joints as well." Costly lesson learned ! Lube the joints folks !

I don't believe the u-joints in the intermediate shaft are serviceable, I just replaced the intermediate shaft in my 2005 Ion-1, it cost $130 from the dealer & I did it my self in under an hour.

The problem I was having was an occasional shudder in the steering wheel at highway speeds.

The joints in most vehicles steering shaft is not serviceable. The only I've ever seen with greasable joints were in Class 8 trucks.

I own a 2004 Ion 2 quad coupe. roughly 2 years ago my steering stiffened right up and became hard to turn. After awhile it became easy to turn again, but now bigger problems arose. Recently it's been making a crunching sound when I turn the wheel, also gained about 8 inch's of play in the wheel. I ended up investigating what was going and to my surprise, it turns out there is a universal joint of some sort at the base of the steering shaft. It can be found if you crawl under the car and look just in front of the firewall. Needles to say that universal joint has broke, currently cracked real bad and needs to be replaced. This is a safety issue, if you've had stiff steering get under your car with a flash light and see if it's a broken universal. And if anyone knows the proper name for that universal joint, I would greatly appreciate knowing myself.

you need the intermediate shaft, I believe, and it's the whole shaft, not the joint. hard steering is not the same problem, it is usually the EPS motor going.

Hey, GOOD NEWS

My intermittent on/off power steering assist was fixed for no cost. I called the local Chevy Dealer about my 2006 Ion with the problem, and the service manager said to bring it in and maybe it will be fixed at no charge because it may be recalled for that problem. My wife took it in, mentioned the possible recall to the tech after an estimate of $290.00 was given to her, he checked and said yup. One hour later the repair was finished and no charge.

2004 ION-3 Sedan
Default Re: Steering Problem

I have an '04 Ion 3 Sedan (it's actually my wife's car, and she's the one that had this problem). We had the same problem about two years ago. There is a TSB out for this vehicle, that probably covers many of your cars as well. It states that there is a know problem with the electronic assisted power steering. The problem can be caused by, among other problems, incorrectly jump starting your car. If your battery, like mine, is in the trunk, you have a red positive post at the under hood junction box. If you connect to this, and a second, small post on the passenger side of the junction box, you can blow your power steering fuses. My problem wound up being the motor itself, which required the total replacement of my steering column.
