you may be able to get it back. all you can really try is: cleaning all the sensors and TB, only run top tier gas and run more fuel system cleaner through it, make sure your air cleaner is clean. also, if your plugs looked that bad, you may have gunked up your o2 sensors and cat, not to mention the damage that could have been done to your ignition system.

Ok, I have more fuel system cleaner, and will run higher grade fuel at the next fill up.

I've never had to buy/or use sensor cleaner before. Any specific brand that you would recommend? Recommended TB cleaner? Also, is there a specific o2 sensor cleaner? or, will MAF sensor cleaner work for that as well? Would you recommend a direct fit Cat converter replacement?

I hate to throw so many questions at you, but I want to get this right. Your knowledge on these cars is invaluable to me, and I highly appreciate having a sort of go-to guy for repair tips. So thank you.

just use MAF sensor cleaner (or even just "sensor cleaner"). just use a rag and rubbing alcohol or the sensor cleaner to clean the TB. no brand is really that different from another. there is only one way to replace the cat, which is to buy the downpipe it's attached to, so you're stuck with stock unless you want to change your whole exhaust.

I noticed in the first post you also mentioned to rub, not spray. I cleaned my TB a few weeks ago and sprayed to clean inside it (with the TB removed from the engine and sensors removed from the TB). I hadn't seen this thread when I did, so now I'm curious, why rub and not spray? Since I did spray, is there anything I should be looking for to go wrong?

You may remove any lubricant in the pivots, damage the sensors if not removed, or on throttle by wire ions you can break down the seal protecting the electronics. It's just much safer. Now, if you don't have any luck cleaning out the sensor holes (use a pipe cleaner), or need to clean out the cavity the sensor lives in, careful spraying may be in order, but be careful.

And while I'm thinking about it, do we have a timing belt or chain? And when should this be changed, 100k?

I've asked, if you want to spend time asking, go for it. Chain, and it's not a scheduled maintenance item. That being said, I'm probably going to look into getting mine changed around 150k (about half the expected life of the engine), if I still have the car. Timing chains don't seem too failure prone in ecotecs since they fixed the oiler issues.

not for quite a while if you do change it.

you might want to see if you can use your "girlish charm" on charlie and get him to sticky some more popular topics (I'm assuming you're a woman, since your signature says elizbeth), it would eliminate a lot of questions.

Thumbs Up Re: suggested PM/services for ions by year and engine

I spoke to two service depts 1 Saturn (no longer exists) and another chevy GM which still has old timer saturn techs working there and they have never heard of/had a chain go, snap or jump in an Ion according to there records. However I am sure it has happended in the past at other places. I may do mine at at 125 or 150K myself.

Ok. So it's getting close to that time that I need to change out my spark plugs (I'm at 93,500 right now). I know to go with iridium over platinum, but what brand should I go with? I was thinking either http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...er=940700_0_0_ , this one, http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...er=940700_0_0_ or should I just go with the good ol' AC Delco plugs?

Seeing we know the AC/Delco's are 100% correct for the car. Seeing we know they last about 100,000 miles. Seeing we know they perform quite well. Why would we go and change that?

Thank you all for the great information! I was about to put Bosch plugs in my Saturn and my Ford truck this week until I read about these issues for both vehicles on forums.

Never heard of anything bad about the NKG plugs, either. A good bit of the S-Series owners use them. Either contribute and tell my why they wont be a good choice, or don't comment and leave it up to 2006 ion2 to explain it to me.
