Yeah but I meant mechanical parts that I should purchase. Like brake lines or something.

I'm doing the brake fluid flush when I change out the rotors and pads.

Should I try to stick with OEM parts?

I am an idiot. I didn't reread my post before I read yours and I thought that you forgot to finish your post. Sorry for all the posts. :/

I'm still curious about the drum brakes though. I've never serviced drum brakes before and I don't know what parts to replace.

it depends. i replaced my shoes with the mid grade autozone ones 2 months ago. before they were squealing upon braking. now its doing the same thing. the shoes have chunks missing out of the sides. so im going to replace the drum and shoes again to see if this helps any.

^^ what he said. you have to look at them, and see what's going on with the current ones before you can tell what to replace if you replace just the pads, you need to deglaze the drums.

if you'd read my posts on optimas, you would recall they were saying to buy any brand BUT optima, since they don't make the special vented type battery our cars require. all I can say for sure is use common sense when you buy one. buy a brand you're comfortable with or the one with the most warranty available in your area. ac delco batteries have proven to overall be quite reliable from the factory.

another note is, when looking for dealer sourced parts, chevy dealerships have taken over responsibility for parts.

RE: Battery

When I replaced my factory ACDelco a couple years ago I found a vented model at a regional chain for $60-$70 while the ACDelco and limited other models seemed to be well over $100.

My point is as 2006 ion2 mentioned get the vented battery, it can be found for the same price as a non-vented.

RE: TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline

Do check/recheck the posted link occasionally for new retailers offering the fuel. ExxonMobil has joined the standard in the last year after dragging it's feet ever since it's introduction in 2004.

Hoping to perform a cleaning of the MAF and TB on my 2003 very soon. I'll try and take some pics. Probably still can't post pics to my Gallery (has anyone been able to?) but I'll try and link them anyway. I'm assuming the MAF Sensor Cleaner is safe for the Sensors I need to clean on the TB or do I need a third can of cleaner?

Didn't find a MAF sensor ('05-'07 IONs have 'em?) like the one I found on an '05 Equinox but I did clean all the sensors found with the MAF cleaner. TB didn't seem as dirty as I'd have expected... cleaned that and reassembled everything. With luck it'll fire up without issues after I clean up myself.

Swapped out my 2003's Platinums (41-981) for Iridium plugs (41-105) today. After almost 92000 miles they seemed "normal" but I'm not entirely sure how "complete" the electrode really is, since I never checked them earlier at 50k/75k for comparison.

Seen several pics of other ION plugs that show electrodes that have eroded significantly more... (Were a pair were significantly more eroded then the other two) mine were very consistent between cylinders and near original spec. gap.

RE: "pre-gap"
My AC Delcos mention to gap to spec. but I did read warnings elsewhere that I must not "touch" the very hard, yet brittle iridium electrode or the insulator. Otherwise it does adjust like a traditional plug. You just have to be more careful with the electrode.

Question about the Throttle body. Is there an affect on gas mileage if the Throttle body is dirty? If so, any idea how much so?

The reason why I ask is because when I first started reading this thread, I saw that Bosch spark plugs are bad mojo in the Ecotec. Silly me had those spark plugs, got terrible gas mileage (12-16 on average).Made the switch to AC Delco Iridiums and didn't it didn't look like there was any damage. The bosch plugs were a little burnt when I pulled them out, kind of like they were in there for 20K, after only about 9 thousand. The problem is that after switching, I haven't seen any improvement in gas mileage... if it helps I used techron fuel system cleaner the last time I changed the oil, which was less than 1k miles ago.

I don't think there is any significant damage, because I'm posting 2 weeks after the change and the car still functions normally minus the bad gas mileage

any thoughts?...

You might never get the mileage back. The throttlebody being dirty only effects how long it will last, and in extreme cases, how elk the car idles and the plate moves. The bosch plugs damage the ignition system and the engine, good luck.

so, did I ruin the gas mileage indefinitely? or can you think of any way I can fix it?
Also I remember that you posted about not gapping Iridium plugs. I didn't know this at the time I installed them on this car, so I used a gap tool to check them, and all four gaps were too narrow. I moved them to .043 with the tool. Could that be the reason for bad mileage?

I'm really hoping I didn't ruin a good engine...

and thanks for your help.
