Default suggested PM/services for ions by year and engine

so, I see a lot of repeat questions on this subject, and figured a writeup would be in order.

some of the commonly neglected things on ions.

sensors:
on 03-04 2.2 ecotecs, you have an IAT and TPS in your TBs, these along should be removed from the TB every few years and cleaned gently with sensor cleaner and a clean, lint free cloth.

on the rest of the ions, you have a combined MAF and IAT (redlines may be just a MAF, not 100%), it gets dirty, and should be cleaned only by gently spraying with MAF sensor cleaner, as a last resort, a MAF cleaner soaked lint free cloth can be used gently.

lately more coolant level sensors have been giving false low readings. if the readings are verified false, remove the tank and swish warm water with dish detergent in it, let it soak for 30 minutes or so, then swish and rinse all detergent from the tank and sensor.

fluids:
there is some debate on this topic, but I would like to address both over and under frequently changed fluids here.

your manuals can give you specific exceptions, but in general, transmission fluids re good to 100K for automatics, and indefinitely with manual transmissions. and T-IV is the 5 speed aisin's fluid (03-04 sedan), the CVT (03-04 coups) need to be done by the dealership, 05-07 GM 4 speed autos use dex VI (not dex III), 5 speed manual getrags use a special GM fluid, but this is very affordable as we only need 2 quarts.

oil in these cars does not need to be changed besides when the OLM calculates the need, but the OLM is not a level sensing system, so you need to check your oil level regularly.

the coolant is a 150K/5 year coolant, at this point, or if it turns a brown color, a flush is not a terrible idea, but unless it turns brown, running fresh water through the system until it comes out clean should more than suffice. there are affordable testers available at your local parts stores to better determine your coolant's condition.

brake/clutch fluid is shared on this car. this is the most often overlooked fluid IMO on cars, along with power steering fluid (these cars do not have PS fluid). every 5 years or when it is no longer translucent (brown/black), you should lower the level to right above the bottom of the reservoir, then put fresh fluid in the reservoir and working your way from the passenger's rear tire towards the reservoir, bleed the old fluid out, being sure not to introduce air into the system, until clear fluid comes out.hydraulic fluids (like brake and HPS fluid) are hygroscopic in nature, and absorb moisture readily. over 5 years this characteristic and it's ability to hold solids in solution, make it likely to cause brake cylinder lockup and/or cause premature wear and corrosion, requiring you to replace parts unnecessarily. if you can get to the clutch bleeder, you can do this procedure on it, too, or you can have a dealer do it for you, but it is important you do this, too.

general things to watch for:
TBs get dirty on these cars, for all cars, cleaning the bores should be done every couple years. you remove the TB, and on 03-04 2.2L ions, the sensors from the TB, and clean them all with sensor cleaner (or alcohol for the bore/plate of the TB) on a lint free cloth, do not spray, and do not clean TBs on the engine.

rear LCA bushings collapse, these will display as a lack of proper gap between the LCA and sub frame. these clunk when bad. these should be looked at visually multiple times a year.

front sway bar bushings and endlinks go bad, these will squeak and clunk respectively if bad. listen for these particular problems.

if your car doesn't start and a lock icon blinks, replace or regrease your ignition switch.

batteries last about 6 years, if you are unsure of it, local auto stores can test them, but at 6 years, they are generally worn out. our cars use a special vented battery not available everywhere, do not put an improper battery in these cars (no optima batteries were available for our cars at the time of this post), or you will be venting explosive gasses into your trunk.

lint free cloths are specified for a reason, lint or fibers can interfere with sensor operation, which is bad.

IAT= Idle Air Temperature, TPS= Throttle Position Sensor, TB= Throttle Body, MAF= Mass Air Flow, CVT= Constantly Variable Transmission (also called VTI), OLM= Oil Life Monitor

disclaimer time:
this thread is not open for arguments, but if you have something to add to the list, or questions, or want elaboration, feel free to speak up. these facts (most are well proven facts) are derived from testing in the case of fluid life spans (oil, coolant, ect...) done by SOAP programs (oil) or GM (coolant and transmission fluid), or observed trends in person, or by others, and have been proven not to be harmful in saturn ions time and time again. you are all welcome to change whatever whenever, but these cars have excess capacities and do not overwork the fluids (see: chrysler 2.5 V6), and the fluids are all improved over cars in the past, both allowing extended intervals. it's engineering, not crazed rambling. you are entitled to your opinions, and some of this writeup is just that, my opinion, but I have avoided that wherever possible.

spark plugs

The interval is 100K miles. Depending on the year, they are either platinum or iridium and should have no problem going 100K miles without worry. A light dab of anti-seize on the threads of the new plugs is a very good idea. And I've also used a little on the coil pack hold down bolts for good measure. the same can be said for the 2007 that has individual coils instead of a coil pack.

yes, if you have the stock iridium plugs (not the platinum ones) and your engine runs like it should, your plugs should last 100K miles. I believe the earlier ions came with platinum plugs, which do not last as long. check your manuals to confirm. inspections for gap and completeness of the electrodes should be done at 50K, 75K, and 100K, also, if they smell like gas or oil, you have a problem. on 2.2s and 2.4s, .043 is the gap, 2.0s are .040. do not put bosch plugs in these engines, iridium plugs come pre gapped and are NOT gap adjustable, you will damage the plug if you try this.

gottac check the emissions sticker for each year and motor because the gaps are slightly different between the 2.4 and 2.2, as well as at least one year to year change. I do not have my chilton's here with me but I know there were differences. I think the older years had a slightly smaller gap but that very well could have been because the earlier years came with the plats not the iridiums.

to add...When changing your spark plugs DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN.

It is also common for your brake pads to last over 100,000 miles, that will all depend on your braking habits and driving pattern of course.

definitely, use a little anti-sieze on all but the last two threads and do not over tighten. also, do not use bosch plugs in ecotec engines.

another thing, I was reading TSBs the other day and remembered all ecotec fuel injectors are prone to plugging, so run top tier gas http://www.toptiergas.com/ or put fuel injector cleaner in your tank regularly.

What injector cleaner do you suggest?

Why does that (ecotec fuel injectors are prone to plugging) happen with the ecotec engines? I always use Mobil or Shell Regular and that happend to mine.

it would have to be the internal design of the injector. shell serves top tier gas, but mobil doesn't, so there you go...

by me the only shells are on my way to other parts of the state or neighboring state, so I only get to fill up every now and then with top tier gas. as a result, I use injector cleaner every so often, and will probably have to get my injectors cleaned somewhere down the road.

IMO Techron would be a better choice. They sell 2 size bottle depending on your tank size.

Always use a bottle every time you change your oil, and your engine and injectors will love you.

adreaschen, one that says "fuel injector cleaner" on it

honestly, reading the labels will help you pick the right one, no need for octane boosters, though. putting any reputable fuel injector cleaner (stay away from gimmicks like snake oil) will help your injectors.

techron is my personal favorite, but you need to have it available. you can find it in "generic" form by looking for the obvious bottle style (can't remember where I've seen this, though).
