Default Egr

My check engine light came on in my 05 saturn relay. I did a diagnostic which said my EGR pressure valve was messed up. I ordered the new valve and it will cost $250. Is there any way to fix this without it costing me an arm and a leg? I read on another post taking it out and using carb cleaner on it? Does it really work?

Default Re: Egr

Welcome to Saturnfans!

There are two types of egr valves; the older vacuum operated ones resembling a mushroom and the latest type, electrically operated with electronic feedback shaped like a cylinder. Only two issues affect these egr valves; carbon encrusted shaft preventing smooth opening/closing or the feedback circuit was damaged from mishandling or solvent entering past the shaft and shorting the circuit. Search for threads or the How-to library on cleaning the valve, making a temporary blocking gasket as a secondary test to cleaning to verify a faulty egr valve, and Google for how it works.
