Default Manual Transmission Fluid On 2001 SL1

Is it ATF or something different?
My 2002 SL1 appears to have ATF in it but when I drained the 2001 it has some nasty looking black fluid in it.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Yeah, even the Manual Satty S-Series used ATF. If I recall, I think some people put gear grease or something, and sometimes that would make it get nasty and black. I don't think the S-Series needs that stuff. And I think the Manual version calls for Dex III ATF, just like the Auto.

And don't believe the bottle if/when it tells you that Dexron VI is backwards compatible with Dex III. It's too thin in a Saturn manual trans. Dex III is still out there if you look.

+1, if you read the bottle of Dex VI closely, it says backwards compatible with all automatic transmissions that originally were spec'd for Dex III.

some people have had no problems with Dex VI in their manual transmissions, but for the amount of money involved compared to the price of a replacement trans, it's a no-brainer - go with a good synthetic.

...Wait, what, I actually won that eBay auction? Guess I now (12/2008) own a 1998 SL2, silver, 5 spd :p 102k @ purchase, now 169k
And now (7/2010), a Craigslist 1997 SC2, white, 5 spd

Yeah, and with the duration between changes being essentially infinite, it almost makes no sense to use conventional fluid.
