Default P0300 Random Misfire detected - What to do???

I have a 2005 ION Quad Coupe. It ran GREAT. Parked over night, now when started it sounds likes it's running on 3 cylinders. Idles rough, after 2 or 3 minutes at idle the check engine light came on.

I plugged in a new Equus 3140 Innova Diagnostic Code Scanner for OBDII Vehicles (canbus compatible) and got a p0300 dtc.

As I said, this car was running GREAT. It's been well maintained with 55k miles by saturn. I hate to tow it to the dealer. They are some distance away and the cost of the tow alone is going to exceed $100.00.

We had a problem with the fuel pump at around 30k and it wouldn't start at all - under warranty the dealer replaced the fuel pump and even picked up part of the towing.

What can I check? I pulled the plugs, one looks blacker than the rest. I don't think its a compression problem, because as I said on Sunday we were driving all over the place, then Monday morning - started rough first thing. I haven't driven it yet and it's still in the driveway.

Thanks

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

FYI, you can flat tow ions. get a good tow strap and slowly make your way to the dealership that way if you must. any SUV, minivan, or small truck should be able to pull an ion. as far as common causes, the coil pack and ICM, replace both and the plugs all at the same time if you do, one can take out the others. if you do this, but it still acts up, tow it to saturn.

I thought a P0300 was caused by a clogged converter?Try it.And like 2006 above me said.Check the coil packs and change the plugs.Drive it around and then pull the one plug that was black and see if its black again.Probably losing compression. Then take it to the dealer.

Thumbs Up Re: P0300 Random Misfire detected - What to do???

So, just to follow up on this posting.

Problem SOLVED!

I removed the fuel rail. Cleaned the injectors. Replace spark plugs. Replaced the Ignition Coil Pack.

Once reassembled, it started right up. Idles smooth, just like new.

Thanks

P0300 is a multiple misfire code. P030x where x is the specific cylinder the misfire occurred.

My first thought would be the ICM. Seems to be more often than not the misfire problem on the Ecotec's

you missed the problem, man, they fixed it already. though, if you didn't replace the ICM (the silver heat sinked part married to the coil pack) you really should.

I know I saw that but with the collection of parts tossed on, it didn't really say which part fixed it. My bet would have been on the ICM. Been there once already!!

yeah. the way I've seen it in person, and by what has happened on here, with GM's coil pack between the cam system (tech 4 and 03-06 2.2 ecotec) one likes to take out the other, and should be replaced as a unit.

My ICM went but the coil pack was fine. Had to drive almost 20 miles home on 2 cylinders. Tested a brand new coil pack from AZ and also did plugs but didn't change the way it ran. The guy at AZ was cool about it, told me to bring the pack right back if it didn't fix it. Usually electronics and electrical parts you can't return. Had to wait for the dealer to open the next day to get an ICM. At least it was easy to get to and replace. Sux that it costs $100
