How much oil were you loosing from this bolt not being tight? Is there a seal behind the pulley that might need to be replaced? The lower dogbone mount is completely caked in oil. I just can't imagine that the valve cover seal is the main culprit. It might leak a little, but not enough to cause this mess.

Took in my husband's 1997 SL for inspection, it is leaking like a sieve, puddle when parked and drips while pulling out of the driveway for a good 20 feet, it has always burned oil, but this leaking began after the head and timing chain were replaced. It is now throwing 3 codes (don't know which) that are not registering to throw on the CES. Taking it in tomorrow afternoon to see if we can find the culprit....hopefully nothing major.....considering the above repairs that were just completed.

checked my oil yesterday and i was suspiciously low(3/4 qt). checked about 2 weeks ago and it was pretty much full. put a towel under my car at work today and confirmed i do have a leak again, same area(right under where the filter screws in) the first time i thought it was because i put the filter on too tight but the last 2 oil changes i've made sure to put it on correctly. i might try the oil pan nuts thing, idk. doesn't seem like it does it all the time cause i know i've gone some times without it leaking.

i will just continue to top off i guess, i can handle 1 qt every 3k miles

I was losing a quart per 20 miles. It was ridiculous. It was several months after I replaced the crank pulley too. Yes there is a seal behind it. It's only about $7.

I have this same leak. Under the filter but not the filter. I've change the filter twice and cleaned the block with a razor blade to ensure it's clean before mounting the filter.

What did you figure out?

I did the toiletpaper around the valve cover. It's not leaking there. It appears higher than the oil pan. There is a sending unit on the block that I'm guessing is the oil pressure sender. It's wet so it could be that. Could be the head gasket too as I see oil that high. I use to have to re-torque the head on my Alfa. Do you have to re-torque Saturn heads?

I don't think it's the crank seal since 1) the oil is higher up the block and 2) the oil is all on the firewall side of the engine. I would think the crank seal would result in some oil make it to the front side of the engine with the heaviest oil on the passenger side where the crank pulley is located. .

I think I may have located my oil leak. After changing the valve cover gasket, which was one leak, I cleaned off the back side of the block. 1000 or so miles later, I have a lot of oil on the back of the block again but none up by the manifold.

There is a sending unit near the alternator that I believe is the culprit. It's extremely wet and has drops of oil on it. There is very little oil on the block above that point.

Is that the oil pressure sending unit? I'm not sure what else it would be given its location. I just want to make sure I'm ordering the correct sending unit.

Thanks.

Thanks for the pic.

I believe it's #16 in your pic, which is the oil pressure sensor. I'll order one and see if it resolves my problem.

I'll also post back if it fixes the problem, which , unfortunately, the earlier poster never did. :-( I"ll have to clean up the back of the engine and run it awhile to be sure so it may be several weeks before I post back on results.

My oil leak is fixed. Was the oil light sending unit. That's pretty easy to get to but not easy to get to with a wrench. Thought it would take 5-10 minutes to replace. Took quite a bit longer due to the wrench angle.

I'm about two weeks with no leak. Car sat undriven for four days with no spots underneath so I'm pretty confident the sending unit resolved the problem.

Nice, thanks for the follow-up. Always good to have something like that resolved.

Next oil change, I may put a wrench around mine and make sure it is tight. I think I have a very small oil leak - no oil on the garage, even sitting over the weekend, but the bottom of my oil pan is always wet with oil. Small enough that I have not chased it down.

My oil pan was wet with oil and I seemed to have fixed the issue by replacing the O-ring gasket of the oil pan drain plug. Old Nuc advised that a slow seepage and rushing wind while driving could cause the pan to be covered with oil over time. It seems he was correct.
