Sad Saab going the way of Saturn in copycat killing.

Koenigsegg Backs Out of Plan to Buy Saab From GM

DETROIT (AP) -- General Motors Co. says a Swedish specialty car maker has ended plans to buy GM's Saab brand.

CEO Fritz Henderson says the Detroit automaker is disappointed in the decision by Koenigsegg Group AB and will take the next several days to figure out what to do.

The decision casts serious doubt on the future of Saab, which GM wanted to sell or close this year.

This isn't new news....it was announced over the summer. GM was trying to find someone to buy Saab just like they were with Hummer and Saturn.

And the only one they had success in selling was Hummer. No one wanted Saturn and Saab.

Any correlation here?

That blows. I liked Saab, and was hoping Koenigsegg could turn out some nice cars for the brand

Hummer was bought by a Chinese heavy equipment manufacturer. When AM General first built Hummer back in the day, before Hummer was bought by GM...it was a military only operation. The problem stemmed from the fact that AM General was losing money and GM bought Hummer.

Hummer should have stayed a "Military Only" operation. People didn't NEED to be driving around in those things...

GM's still trying to find a buyer, but it's unlikely.

For those who'd want PAG to look at Saab now that Konigsegg is out of the picture, Penske's probably saying 'Fool me once...' He's moved on.

People actually want to buy Hummers? Maybe
Hummer is a stronger brand.
Plus GM (H3) and AM General (H2) are still willing to manufacture vehicles for the new owners for the forseeable future.

What about the H3? Hummer is more than just the original H1
The H2 is still an AM General design built using GM parts at an AM General plant

True...but when the market is flooded with so many different SUVs, Crossovers, and heavier terrain vehicles...

My personal feelings are that Hummer should have always been a military only vehicle operation.

Can you imagine if International Harvester's MXT and related lines would have taken off? Then we would have seen everyone driving these around:

I've touched on this a few times, but some people really do NEED those vehicles. For example, where I live, the average vehicle is either a full size sedan, or an SUV/Crossover/Pickup truck. There are very few vehicles that weigh less than 4000 pounds on our roads, especially in northern Palm Beach County where I live. Couple that with impatient drivers (who are often not skilled drivers either), busy trucking lanes up and down I-95 in our area, and the elderly who are unpredictable drivers, you've got a very dangerous area to drive in.

So large SUVs like the Hummers provide that extra bit of security and peace of mind. Around here, driving something the size of a Corolla or even Camry is near suicide. Because when someone slams into you in a Range Rover, QX56, Escalade, Navigator, or any of the plethora of large vehicles around here, if you're not in something decently sized you are screwed.

Plus the 4WD is nice for bad weather, and the form follows function aspect of the vehicle make them very useful and versatile vehicles. And for years, the H3 was GM's best product in the upscale smaller SUV market.

So I guess NEED is a relative term. But really, we don't NEED cars. But you know what, I want a car, and I want a big vehicle so that if my girlfriend or I are smashed into by a large vehicle, the passengers inside my vehicle will be safe.

They do make those giant trucks in passenger vehicles. There's a Black one up by where I live, and there's a Maroon Chevy version of one at FAU every day.

As an aside, my girlfriend drove back to Cape Coral today to visit her mom for T-Day. It was raining pretty bad all day and the interstate was a mess. And it got dark out really early. I was on edge the whole time she was driving.

Saturn would of sold if they gave it the means to survive (Spring Hill Facility) but no way would GM ever let that happen. Saturn left alone would of been GM's star but corporate can't get their heads out of their posterior end. Imagine if the EV-1 was now the Saturn EV5. If Saturn ever had a "Fonzie jumps the shark moment" it was when they started thinking big. Size doesn't always matter around here you can have a whole mountainside come down and flatten 2 SUV's and a Outback all at once.

...
1995 SL1 oil burner school commuter looks nice...1997 SL1 Gold 5-speed with new junk yard wheels and tires just got 40.4 MPG....2002 SL1 sometimes 45 MPG on a spring highway drive

I am sure Penske could have talked them into a deal to obtain the plant if he really wanted it. GM has already sold the old Sky and Solstice plant to Fisker. Penske didn't want to incure the costs of having to build the vehicles himself, he wanted to take the cheap route and use another manufacturer from the very beginning

Bloomberg is reporting that it's possible some of Saab's assets could be sold to Beijing Auto and the division shut down.

I was fortunate enough to have rented a Saab 9-3 from Enterprise two years ago. It was surprisingly fun to drive.

I look at the Chinese snapping up tired brands that nobody seems to want and remember fondly when the Japanese were foolishly buying up real estate at ridiculous multiples of what anyone else would pay to get trophy properties. The Japanese didn't fare too well. I think the same is going to happen with the Chinese buying spree. They'll strip whatever tooling and technology they can and perhaps continue to slap the brand badge on something produced in China. The chance of them turning any of those discarded brands into a going concern is vanishingly small. They don't have the management skill or corporate culture to compete in a global marketplace and I don't see that changing in the near term.
