Default 2003 L200 fuel leak from top of tank

My 2003 L200 is leaking from the top of the tank when running.....any ideas if it is leaking from a fitting or fuel pump....can I cut a hole in the floorboard under the rear seat to get access to it? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Does the leak continue when less than a full tank exists? Dropping the tank is probably necessary. Even if the filler neck was damaged the tank would have to be dropped for repairs.
  • Unless you're given specific dimensions on where to drill and cut in the trunk floor by anyone, you're risking puncturing the gas tank and/or lines (power and fuel).

I understand this is a common Saturn problem. I'm about to drop my gas tank to see where the leak is. It happens only while the engine is running. I expect to find a bad fuel pump assy which costs $350. I believe the 90 degree hose fittings on the fuel pump are cracking.

Just because this topic deals with the fuel line/tank...I am replacing my fuel filter, but I don't have a pressure gauge like the Haynes says you need when changing the filter. Can I relieve the pressure on the rail using the valve under the hood, and just collect the fuel with a rag? Or would a bunch still spray out and be excessive? I just don't see the point of a gauge for such a small preventative fix.
