Here's a true story: Years ago when my wife wanted to buy herself a car she insisted we go to our local Honda dealer...20 minutes later we left after encountering an A-hole salesman. Believe it or not, I had never forgotten the above TV campaign from Saturn so I said...let's head to Saturn. She said..."Who are they?"...I said "I'm not sure but let's go see". Four Saturn's later and to this very day, the feeling at our dealer is as nice as the one in the commercial.

I remember that ad.

My mother and father had purchased a 1993 SL2 that was brand new and they had their picture taken as well.

I got a tear watching that

It's really too bad that Saturn may not have that anymore....

Those were the days. Hard to believe that it was only back in 1991 when a small car company could be so different and make a lasting impression on so many owners...

I had similar somewhat sappy experiences with my original S car purchases (SL1/SL2 for my girlfriend at the time and an SC2 for me). In those days, the Saturn dealers really did go out of their way to be different. And it kept me coming back. 'course, I also kept coming back because the cars were dirt cheap and the polymer panels were great for banging around NYC. I still miss my ol' SC2 sometimes. It was a fun car to toss around.

Cheers,

Ive bought 8 since 1992 and every one of them were handled like the above ad. Saturn of Lexington still handles their customers like that. I really hope that I will be able to do business with them in the future.

Oh snap! But yes, Americans are suckers for free stuff with our cars. Whether it's a picture being taken at Saturn, or the Fast dolls that came with GTIs, we want a low cost item to be a big portion of our very expensive item decision making process! :P

For me it was more about being treated as a human being. For me, the dealership seemed to care about me having a positive experience plus making some money. It was not just about the money. I remember going to Toyota dealerships two times. The salespeople acted like snobs. Pretty much said we are the best, nothing else compares, are you worthy? Saturn listened and seemed to care about me.

Agreed...

I'll say this...I am on first name basis with mostly everyone in the Service Department at the dealership I go to....one of my good friends is a Saturn Mechanic that I first met in 2002 when I was getting an oil change done.

I highly doubt that I would ever be on a first name basis at any other dealership/brand of vehicle.

The only people that those commercials targeted are rice racer kids, I don't see a 50 year old watching that and thinking hey I want a vw. At least the old Saturn commercial could target any audience that was looking to buy a Saturn.

A similar commercial might work today if the Saturn dealers were truly able to treat people like they did back then.

The two retailers where I've bought our Saturns still do it the "SATURN" way. I'm sure there are some exceptions, but the typical Saturn sales experience is the best!

I'll have to admit, the two Saturns out of the 22 I've owned, that exact thing happend. The cheer, bringing the car into the show room and the picture on the wall.
