Default 1997 SL1 Cluster and taillight problem.

I just bought a 1997 SL1 with 224 000 km. It's a manual transmission. Car is in great overall shape.
The speedometer and odometer DO NOT work as do the rear running lights. (brake lights work) The tach, fuel and temp gauge work in the cluster. The previous owner said the two issues are related. I bought the car knowing it had these problems and hoping it would be a fairly simple fix. I just want a few pointers from the experts before I start pulling things apart. Thanks for your help.
