2004 VUE Red Line
Default Another exciting round of "guess what that noise is"

I get a noise in my passenger front wheel well ONLY. It happens most often when the passenger wheel is going over a bump, and the driver wheel is not. If both wheels go over a bump (speed bump for instance) no noise, if the driver wheel goes over a bump only, no noise. It almost sounds like the noise something would make when its pivoting.

The springs, shocks, and struts are all old, I need to replace these soon, but haven't given me any sort of issues as of yet. Strut mounts were replaced probably 10 months ago or ~ 10k miles. Passenger side wheels are very very slightly out of round, but not anything that should be noticeable.

Do you guys think its the strut mount, again? It's definitely a different noise than it made before. Are there sway bar end links in the front? I've always felt that my Vue has way too much body roll, perhaps this is part of it?

I Look forward to hearing your opinons. Thanks guys.

Based on what I've read, my guess is one of these:

strut mount <--most likely
strut
sway bar endlink
worn brake caliper slide bushing

What is it that goes bad on a strut mount? Is it rubber or plastic? Is it possible to change the strut mount without taking out the strut and spring (compress the spring) and leaving the strut bolted up on the bottom thus avoiding a front end alignment? Providing the strut is still good. Maybe this is just grandious thinking on my part.

If you could get a spring compressor in there then I guess you could remove the strut mount without having to remove the bolt in the bottom (maybe). It may be a real bugger getting the center nut off the shock though as these are ususally rusted pretty good. If rusted, it will just cause the shock rod to spin.

Ever figure out what it was? I was having pretty much the exact same symptoms you described and I ended up having a bad sway bar endlink.

I haven't even started to look at it. But I'm thinking it's probably the end link because the mounts are somewhat new. I'll probably go ahead and take care of that when I install some new springs.

Upper strut mount on the drivers side is being replaced on my 06 Vue Red Line at 52K miles (along with the torque converter). Quite possibly the same problem you are experiencing, symptoms are the same on my Vue.
