Default Will Astra be marketed under other GM brands?

Cannot imagine this good model to fade out of America market in just 2 years. Is it possible to be sold under other GM brands?

I am not going to purchase a new car recently but I had made up my mind of getting a new Astra later...what a terrible news if it is blown away...

Buick? LOL. that reminds me of the 1999-2002 Cougar that was a Mercury to sorta replace the Ford Probe. I would not set foot in a Buick or Mercury dealer looking for a sport compact car.

The rumor is Buick, but the rumor is also the sedan version only. I wouldn't expect to see the hatch version as a Buick. For some reason that makes no sense to me, people don't seem to want a hatchback in the U.S.

OP, when you are ready to buy in a few years check out the chevy cruz.

dont let the ad campaign that says 'all new' fool you!

Or, save your money and buy a used astra. a used astra will probably offer the most car for the money in two years. i bet you will have your pick of 25k mile astras for under 10k, probably 8k in two years.

From what I've been hearing, the Cruze is essentially an Astra with a different body slapped on it, this true? If it ends up using the same engine that we have, things ought to look up for service and aftermarket support.

It can't help but fade out, since 2009 was the last year of this body style. The new 2010 looks pretty sharp and may see light as a Buick. I don't have a lot of faith in that rumour, however, since the average age of a Buick owner is currently 65* and the styling of the next generation Astra would appeal more to the younger crowd (if you were in the 18-25 age bracket, would you buy a "Buick"?).

* from www.autoweek.com:

What is the average age of a Buick customer?

"It's 65 years old. When we introduced trucks into the lineup a few years ago, we saw a significant drop - almost 10 to 15 years on average. We'll see the same thing happen as we introduce the Lucerne and Enclave. Our target is a wide target. We align with the boomers, but we will introduce new cars that will appeal to a younger audience. It starts at 35 (years old) and goes all the way up."

...
"That's a Hruck Bugbear, manufactured in Eastern Europe in the eighties and imported to the States. People mock it as a poor man's Yugo. I consider it the pinnacle of Cold War Balkan engineering."

The upcoming Chevy Cruz will be based upon the Astra but only a sedan version. Back last year before GM decided to build the car in the US, rumors were strongly abound that they wanted to source the Korean version of this car for US market. That idea was quickly quashed by Obama when he demanded that GM use the newly loaded bail-out money to build their car in the US and save US jobs.

I distinctly remember the particular TV speech Obama gave right when this happened and reading articles of how GM did originally consider importing the Cruz. Immediately after, GM changed plans to build the car at it's Orion, Michigan plant.

It is reported that the new Cruz will come with a standard 1.6L engine or a more expensive 1.8L engine upgrade. I think we did well buying our Astras.

General Motors owns a platform called DELTA and DELTA II many cars all over the world have been built on the DELTA and more will be built on the DELTA II platform. So what ever happens rest assured you'll be able to buy a car on the DELTA II platfrom in the future. You may like or dislike what they offer on the platform in North America. The DELTA proved to be a good platform so I'll guess the DELTA II to be better yet.

Turbocharged 1.4L in the US Cruze. Same power as the Astra's 1.8L NA motor with better fuel economy.
The Cruze will be built at Lordstown. Orion is going to build a subcompact car.

ASTRA is/was sold all over the world with one name or another attached to it. Now it'll be the CRUZE nameplate that hits most everywhere except Opel country. I hope Vauxhall survives all of this with Chevy already in the UK market.
