Default Will Someone Purchase the Saturn Name?

Lot's of good name products have come and gone.

Polaroid - Bankrupt - Name still being used for other products.

Emerson - TV's and Radio's - Well known US company - gone now but
products still sold by other companies that bought name.

Circuit City - Name purchased and now just a web based company.

The list is large.

Will Saturn name be sold/bought - and other products sold under the Saturn name?

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Ha!

The car business is vastly different and more complex than most other business.

Not so fast. Rebranding and recycling defunct names is all the rage these days, fueled mainly by nostalgia.

Could it be done for Saturn? Sure.

Will it be done? I'm doubtful.

Yeah, I doubt the name will get sold. At this point, GM would only sell the entire car company and not a name. The best chances of that is to wait quite a few years after the company is gone and try to make a new company with the Saturn name.

if the name comes back it will have nothing to do with current saturn dealers as they will all be gone. most already closed, getting ready to close or looking for other franchises to sell in the old saturn dealership.

I'm sure if someone REALLY wanted to start resurrecting names, we've got plenty of dead names (not just Saturn), and the list keeps piling up. Obviously, no one's wanting to buy the names and restart them, so..

Car companies never sell off model names, they resurrect them. Chevy Impala and Malibu come to mind. The ill-fated Monza name, first used for the Chevy Corvair, was resurrected in the 70s for a sporty coupe based on the Chevy Vega. The Pontiac LeMans was resurrected as a captive Korean import.

Ford recently renamed it's large 500 sedan--it's now a Taurus, only a few years after that model disappeared. Ford, for many years, would produce a crap car for a decade or so. Once it's reputation was totally trashed they'd replace it with another crap car in the same size class with a new name:

Ford Tempo-Ford Contour

Ford Escort-Ford Focus

Ford Taurus-Ford Fusion (probably not a crap car, but wouldn't sell under the tarnished Taurus nameplate).

Sometimes it worked in reverse--The Lincoln Continental was for years a respected luxury car brand, then sometime in the 90s they slapped the name on a god-awful stretched Taurus that was plagued with faulty high-tech gadgets.

Chrysler is just as busy--the Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 are both recycled model names that originated in the 50s/60s.

Those are models, not brands. That's different. Reusing a model name is common. How many ways could Mercury serve up the Comet, Cougar or Monterey? Charger was used on an Omni based 2 door in the 80s. How many ways could the New Yorker be had over the years. But the brand remained consistent.

Brands used to stand for something. Now they're just some trinket to hang on multinationally sourced products.
Does anyone really feel like they're buying a bit of Chevy DNA when they bring a new Aveo home ? Anyone get that thrill of being part of the Saturn "family" when buying a Relay ? Or that Rocket 88 thrill in a Malibu based Olds Cutlass ?

GM is a great example of a company squandering the history and heritage of it's brands for a short term gain. Escavalanche anyone?
