Default what size socket for drive axle nut???

Hi all, I would like to buy the proper size socket for removing the axle nuts, before I get into a job and realize that I don't have it... thanks in advance...

It will be for either a 96 SL2 or 97 SL1 which I am sure there is no difference

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

It's a 30 mm lock nut. Make sure it's a deep well deep enough to get there.

If you don't have a socket that will fit, get an axle nut socket at your local parts store. They are deeper than what you'll typically find at Sears, etc.

... and often cheaper too. Quite a few companies make those larger off the wall sizes for just about any common car these days.

If you don't have an impact, make sure you have plenty of penetrating oil and a large breaker bar.

I have a regular breaker bar and a 4ft long piece of black pipe that fits over it, works great.

Watch that, and be sure to check the threads closely! We replaced a wheel bearing on my Son's car last week and the nut was hard the whole way off as well. We ended up completely hosing the new nut (and end of the shaft as well) putting it back on. We ended up chasing the threads slightly with a triangular file and the replacement went right on.

Oop! Another POTLD (post of the living dead). Just noticed the view count!
