Lindsay Chappell from Automotive News: As far as auto industry grand experiments go, Saturn lived a long life. From the time GM Chairman Roger Smith incorporated Saturn Corporation in 1985 until October 2010, when GM officially will bury the brand, it will be 25 years.

A mere 10 years after it's inception; SATURN was building inexpensive, dependable, fuel-effecient cars which did as intended; compete with the flood of imports cars.

That's what I own a 95 Sc-1 manual. Last year when I drove from Fort Worth to New York I was still getting 39 to 40 on the highway on that trip with over 225,000 miles on it at the time - and I was driving 65-75 mph all the way. I'm taking the trip again next week and I currently have over 254,000 miles.

I'm not sure if I call the last 10 years as innovative with rehashing other GM products or straight out rebadging (Astra, Relay, Outlook). And really some of those innovations durring the last 10 you may argue were failures, e.g., center instrument panel in the ION and CVT.

2006 VUE Red Line
2007 SKY
Default Re: Saturn Experiment Yielded 25 Years of Innovation

There also was several bright spots in the past 10 years... My favorites are:

Aura - best Epsilon chassis car. Saturn refined this car so it could compete with the best cars in it's class.

SKY - best Saturn sports car. Has looks, ride, handling, and performance.

VUE - best Theta chassis CUV. Unbeatable marriage of performance and utility.

2001 L-Series 2.2L Sedan
Default Re: Saturn Experiment Yielded 25 Years of Innovation

Although it would not be a sign of "innovation," Saturns are extremely easy to maintain and use solid components that do not break.

I think that the L-Series was Saturn's most under appreciated car. I see a lot of them on the road. Many of them have higher mileage than my own, at 174,000 miles.
