2008 VUE 2.4L
Default Lumbar Support Repair - Knob-Style

My 08 XE is about 1000mi out of warranty, when I heard a "pop" and felt my lumbar support collapse.

I decided to attempt to fix it myself; the following is a quick and easy way to potentially fix it if the cable has come loose:

1) Remove back panel. START FROM THE BOTTOM. The top is held in by claw-style mounts that won't give in. I ended up breaking mine, but luckily I can replace it since I have a connection in the business. Work from the bottom up, loosening the plug-style clips, then inserting a flat-head screwdriver into the middle to loosen those clips, then slide the entire panel downward to remove.

2) Fix the cable. The cable runs to the left from the knob, then down, back up through a hoop where a retainer holds the cable outside, then up through a point in the middle of the lumbar support assembly where it then lands and is retained by an opening that the end of the cable fits into. See other photos for detail of it in the repaired condition.

3) Re-Assembly is the reverse of the directions above.

Hopefully this helps everyone with the knob-style lumbar supports, including other Saturn models... PM me for photos; I can't seem to upload them at a large enough resolution to make them worth seeing.

My Lumbar Support is fine (knock on wood), but the knob broke last week...about a week after work was done on my power seat. I'm waiting for the ordered part to arrive...luckily I am still well within my warranty mileage (not quite 20k yet).

Mine is broken as well. My lumbar also makes a very annoying noise everytime I move (heard everytime I go over a bump). I think I will see what they can do next time I take it 1.5 hours to a Saturn dealer since the dealer 1.5 miles away closed in April.

Another update - the metal keeper assembly at the end of the cable has worn through the plastic, which causes the support to loosen and the cable to slide through.

A small metal washer, with a hole just big enough to fit the smaller portion of the end metal keeper, but not the larger one will do the trick. All you have to do is cut the washer from the outside to the middle at one point, separate the washer enough to fit the cable through, then place the washer at the top of the plastic assembly and re-route the cable through the washer in the original mounting position.

My lumbar support is solid as a rock now, with no creaking or slipping like it used to do. Has worked successfully for almost 3,000mi now with no further issues.

Hope this helps,
Z33Fan

The original lumbar knobs & bezels are made of pretty cheap plastic and apparently a common problem of them breaking (says my mechanic).... as mine did too, 8 months into owning the car. (08 XE)
Usually caused by reaching around to get something from the back seat.
They were replaced under warranty with Heavy Duty replacements:
Knob 113780 SP / FP# 19210415
Bezel 113780 SP / FP# 96839555

Hi - do you have the FP# for the plastic seat back component (the one with the mesh pocket)? That's one of the parts I'd like to replace.

Thanks in advance!

Less than $20, shipping included.

I have a buddy that works in the parts dept. at Battison Chevrolet in Duncan. Ill see if he can get the parts for under $20. That shipping is murder... More than the parts combined. Plus, if I can get them in person, that would be better.
The keyless entry thread turned into the lumbar knob/bezel thread so I thought I'd try to get it back on track

Here are the links referenced above:

Knob

Bezel

There are so many orphaned threads on saturnfans.com I thought it would at least give someone a fighting chance of finding current information

Do note that the above part numbers are for the "Titanium" interior color(or so the parts guy at the dealership called it). I posted the part numbers for the "Cashmere" interior color. There is a difference between the leather(vinyl) and cloth bezels. I will get a complete list this next week when I order my replacement knob and bezel.

Okay, so heres the low-down:

Cashmere(tan) interior
Knob- 19210416
Bezel, Cloth- 96839556
Bezel, Leather- 96839570

Titanium(gray)
Knob- 19210412
Bezel, Cloth- 96839555
Bezel, Leather- 96839558

Ebony(black)
Knob- 19210412
Bezel- 96839641

Obviously, being as that Ebony is only available on the upscale VUE's, there is no cloth. It shares the same knob as the Titanium interior VUE's.

I hope this helps!

Thing I cant figure out is, where does the 19210415 knob come in? Is there a TSB on this?

Thanks for sharing! Do you know if these parts will fit a 2008 Saturn Vue XR?
