Duh, GM should be scared either way (1) Saturn closes dealers and GM has to payout lots of money or (2) Pissed off customers at one point or another flock to Foreign cars Nissan, Toyota, Honda, Kia, etc. After this screw up there's no way Id stick with Gm. Oh thats what Saturn was for. Maybe they should have let Magna take a stab at It.

I sure hope Saturn is sold. The buying experience is second to none.
It's just so "high pressure sales" with the foregin automakers.

Wouldn't it be ironic if Magna/Sherbank/Opel would end up with Saturn?

Maybe those of us in North America we'll see that new Opel Insignia as a Saturn Aura after all!

KIA will take a bunch of these dealerships on I'm sure. They are going to be making a lot more cars in their new plants, plants that employ actual United States residents too.

The Saturn dealer network will cease to exist but at least they will be able to move cars for a change.

Actually, no.

Saturn is technically part of "Bad GM" AKA Motors Liquidation Company. Because MLC is currently in bankruptcy, it can void franchise contracts with impunity. If GM choses to go this way, it can do so, with little financial pain.

Sucks for Saturn dealers, but that's MLC's prerogative under bankruptcy.

NO THIS IS A BIG MISCONCEPTION: SATURN IS A MEMEBER OF THE NEW GM. On July 10th, 2009, General Motors Corporation, Saturn LLC, Saturn Distribution Corporation, and Chevrolet-Saturn of Harlem, Inc., sold a substantial amount of their assets to a new legal entity, General Motors Company. These selling companies are transferring your personal information (e.g., your contact information and vehicle purchase history) to General Motors Company. General Motors Company has substantially the same privacy policies in place as General Motors Corporation had. To see General Motors Company new Privacy Statement click here and for information on how to opt-out of being contacted for marketing purposes by General Motors Company (GM) click here.

sheesh, if Saturn is so strong as to make GM afraid of some competition, then why the hell are they dumping Saturn? And if they want a young-focused brand, why did they dump Pontiac and then try and position Buick in that direction?

Conclusion: GM still has very poor marketing, which is why their market share has been shrinking for 30+ years.

Please stop using the term "market share," as it's almost completely irrelevant.

If there were 10 cars sold in the United States last month, and GM sold 9 of them, that would give them a whopping 90% market share!

Do you care about how much your paycheck is in relation to the rest of the country? No. You just care how much money you're making.

The greater the number of competitors in any given market, the lower the market share of each individual company. That's simple math.

GM's lost market share because, over the last 30 years, more companies have started selling cars here.

That is all.

Feel free to look up "Bad GM" assets yourself, you will, sadly, find Saturn in there.

I see your point, but I don't think it's that simple. For one thing, there are quite a few more cars being sold than there used to be, so even with more sellers, GM could have maintained or increased their share.

KIA has been snapping up Saturn dealerships. My nearest Saturn dealer has been a KIA dealer for a few months now.

You also have to factor in that buying foreign used to be taboo, it still is in a lot of small towns. No matter how good GM's vehicles were and are, the change in culture makes maintaining market share almost impossible given the shift in culture. Look at San Fransisco - no GM dealers in the city. That's a culture thing - product and management had nothing to do with it.

sorry, Kimosen, I just don't see where you're getting this from. It's well documented that assimilation in America is standard operating procedure for people who come here from other countries.

But regardless of what culture car buyers are trying to match up with, the automobile purchase is a huge expense for most people, and they are going to buy their best perceived value (in most cases) on these criteria--cost, quality, fit with their social vision, and economy.
GM puts all their marketing on the social vision part, the "what culture am I fitting into" social vision. Even if they're producing cars that fit all four criteria, no one will know it because they don't market to that fundamental. That's also why their cars sell at a discount; they're missing out on three opportunities.

..... But sources close to the negotiations said some members of GM's board were concerned that the deal would create a competitor to the U.S. automaker's remaining mass market car brands.
They are just figuring this out now??? What a bunch of idiots!

Besides, they probably aren't too "concerned" about it anymore since at this point the end for Saturn seems to be sooner than we all anticipated.

I could not agree more.. I don't think the majority of Americans know what makes a Saturn great. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my 99 SL coupe.. It's not sexy on the outside but here is a car produced in 99 that gets 37 mpg/ has ding proof doors/ and who's engine block is cast in a way that makes it light / space frames.. ect... They could and should have taken this along what was learned from their electric car which they killed and marketed the forward thinking to forward thinking social groups which most people identify themselves with today. IDIOTS!
