Retailers Shocked by Sudden Turn of Events

Quote:
Gregory Jackson turned on his television shortly after 5pm Wednesday and was surprised to find out that what appeared to be an imminent sale of the Saturn brand to businessman and racing legend Roger Penske had collapsed. "I am hoping that somehow Penske pulls this thing back together," said Jackson, owner of Prestige Automotive, a St. Clair Shores-based company that has three Saturn dealerships in Jacksonville, Florida.

Does anyone know what this will do to OEM parts availability? I know it's probably going to kill resale values (in my case which was already terrible).

I have a '98 SL. I've heard anecdotes of parts are to be available for at least 10 years, but I have heard problems from mechanics that this isn't always the case.

The Detroit Free Press is reporting, "Saturn vehicle owners are to be able to have their vehi*cles serviced at remaining GM dealerships, and the company plans to continue to provide parts for those vehicles."

But who knows for how long (or for how much more money).

As I recall, federal law mandates that parts be availble for ten years past the termination of production. However, I have personally delt with GM with this issue in the past, with less than stellar results. I once owned a '69 Pontiac Tempest that had one of the 250 OHC straight sixes. This engine was built in two versions for a grand total of about two years. In the late 70's it stripped out the keyway on the crankshaft and required a new one. I waited over two weeks for a new crank to arrive from Lansing, which was mess under the Cosmolene. The mechanic sent it back and we waited another week for a crank, which turned out to be in better shape.
The gist of this all is that they may be required to have a parts supply, but don't count on them to go out of their way. Lets hope the after market parts supply situation improves greatly.
