Default Penske Bets Legacy on Saturn

A new feeditems entry has been added:

Penske Bets Legacy on Saturn

Quote:
Lou Whiteman from thedeal.com: Penske is a believer in Saturn, and has put his money where his mouth is. His Penske Automotive Group over the summer struck a deal to pay an undisclosed sum (believed to be less than $200 million) to acquire Saturn, hopeful of reusing a strategy that has worked for its Smart car unit: becoming a "virtual automaker" that contracts out manufacturing to a foreign supplier while focusing on sales, service, and marketing. Smart has succeeded in part because it offered a product (an ultra-compact and fuel-efficient vehicle) that was largely unavailable in the marketplace.

I do wish him the best. With luck I'll be looking at a new car in a year or two and if I can continue buying Saturn branded vehicles I will do so.

Heck, one reason I liked Saturn was it was a subsidiary of GM to start and not a Chevy or other GM brand, so I hope Penske can save the brand and the new Saturn lasts as we watch the rest of GM disappear into the history books as another failed company that was at one time too big to fail.

You're good. I am right there with you.

And he's risking his own bloody money to do it, not yours or mine.He should be rewarded with my business when the time comes; sales and service and referrals.

Far different from that D-Bag Wagoner going up to Washington with his "We're GM,we don't need a plan. Just give us the g-damn money" attitude.

Penske is a leader not a GM in-bred corporate tool. Good luck to him.

Amen to that.

I can't wait to prove the naysayers wrong.

It will be interesting to see if Penske can provide a product lineup that will be desirable by the American consumer.

Mr Penske please choose wisely.

I wish Penske would let us know his plans (Who is making the new vehicles and pictures). The Staurn dealer near me has a sign in front of it "Kia Grand Opening". It was a large dealership that recently expanded. If they have no product to sell what will happen to the Saturn dealers? So far we have nothing but "Vaporware".

boo hiss as Penske pulls out. Was it for real or just a smoke and mirrors game?

Roger Penske has been in the automotive industry for a LONG FRIGGIN Time...probably longer than some of the members of this board have been alive...

Penske would NOT make a bad decision if he didn't think that there would be viable options for the future. He certainly hasn't done anything bad or wrong on the NASCAR racetrack in ownership or Formula 1 ownership, and dealer franchise ownership...

He knows what he is doing; and while it may be a shock to the system for all of us, as the sale was planned to be completed today; there are probably MANY underlying factors that we will probably never know all of the insides and outs.

In all honesty; if you had purchased a nameplate from a company; but didn't have the viable means to BUILD a car...would you seriously risk your own money to try to make it happen and the end result be a failure?

While the death of Saturn is a sad day today...part of me feels that it is best. Let the company go out to the green automotive pasture to live a fruitful afterlife...after all, the MORALS, SATISFACTION, and DURABILITY of the Saturn is what made it unlike any other car out there.
