1993 SW2
Default Intermittent speedometer/odometer problems

I rear-ended somebody in my 1993 SW2 about a month ago. I basically damaged my drivers side corner, having the hood, fender and bumper replaced. When I got it back, my speedometer and odometer are now acting up. At highway speeds, the odometer will spin about 2-3 times too fast and speedometer will bounce about 5-10 miles higher/lower. I noticed that these problems will all of a sudden go away, then come back together. On surface streets, the odometer will run too fast also. Any ideas?

I would start by doing a visual inspection of the vehicle speed sensor (VSS), which is above the differential. If you find were the axles enter the transmission, look for an electrical connector going into the trans housing right above there. The VSS reads notches in the differential to determine speed, and sends the signal to the PCM and gauges (might be the PCM then the gauges, not sure). I would suspect a damaged sensor or wire.

I know I'm digging up an old thread, but I have seen this problem several times before. If you open up the instrument cluster, you should see a circuit board right behind the speedometer. Look at the green side and inspect the traces. You will probably see some evidence of heat. There is a small capacitor right next to a larger capacitor that will probably look burned. It is a 63V 10uf cap. If you replace that capacitor, and nothing else was fried, your odometer *should* start working correctly again. I believe that this capacitor regulates voltage. Any electrical engineers out there?

Here's a link to a site that sells the replacement capacitor.
