Default GM Won't Save Saturn if Penske Deal Falls Through

A new feeditems entry has been added:

GM Won’t Save Saturn if Penske Deal Falls Through

Quote:
Rick Haglund from Michigan Live: As part of his effort to communicate directly with consumers, General Motors Chief Executive Fritz Henderson took questions from the public on Detroit's Fox 2 and simultaneously in an online Web chat. Several questioners said they were unhappy with GM's decision to shed Saturn. GM has tentative agreements to sell Hummer, Saab and Saturn, although none of those deals have closed. One person asked if GM would keep Saturn if the deal to sell it to auto entrepreneur Roger Penske were to fall through.

Print ShareThisThe Penske Automotive Group is planning to pull the Saturn brand out of Canada after its deal to purchase the company from General Motors closes later this year, a GM spokesperson has confirmed.

According to GM, a business case to continue selling Saturn vehicles in the country couldn't be made as the two corporations work to finalize the transfer of ownership of the brand and its dealer network.

The current dealer network of 46 retail outlets was informed of the decision last week. Saturn Canada sold 18,729 cars in 2008.

Under the proposed deal with General Motors, Penske will continue selling several GM-produced models through 2011 as it searches for new manufacturing partners to provide its dealers with vehicles that will be sold under the Saturn name.

It takes a little while for a transaction like this to occur. Since Penske's intent to purchase Saturn was announced in early June, the official date of completion was before the end of the 3rd quarter 2009. All reports and rumors indicate they are still on track to complete the deal on schedule.

This sounds to me like political maneuvering on the part of GM to further degrade the "value" of Saturn before they lose control of the brand.

I hate that stupid tv ad with the Saturn salesman saying, "Saturn builds cars Americans want to buy" apparently trying to convince any ill-informed, foolish would-be customers that buying a Saturn is a good decision. Hopefully not too many people fall for it, and know that Saturn is a lame duck division because Americans apparently didn't want to buy them, and that at best it'll be transformed into an outlet for cheap import cars. More likely is that the dealerships will close, and any current buyers will have to go to other GM dealerships for service.

I agree that the ads are very misleading, not the Saturn company we remember. The ads look as if Saturn is alive and kicking as the same old company, that's just not true. I think they need an ad more like GM has out that there going to start over and all, that's a better approach. The ads themselves are older ads , I remember seeing them a couple months back when Saturn was about ready to be dumped by GM but hadn't yet. I figure that penski probably doesn't want to spend money on ads or anything right now until the deal is final . Since GM technically still is the owner until the papers are signed and $$$$ has been exchanged I doubt that you will see any new ads. The whole thing is a mess right now, but , it could have been worse. What if nobody stepped up to the plate to rescue Saturn ? where would we be then ?? .So , I guess we just hang in there ,cross our fingers ! and hope that Penski can save Saturn......

GM doesn't need or want Saturn as a competitor.

It wouldn't surprise me if GM sours the deal enough that Penske pulls out.

It looks like it's done with either way by GM dropping the brand or penske bringing mediocre imports over

This whole situation is just so incredibly sad... It was bad enough when the news broke that Fritz was dumping Saturn, but them a little optimism came back when news that Roger Penzke was interested in taking the Saturn reins and moving forward...Now I hear that Saturn in Canada is done, moving out, see ya! What a crock! The article I read said something to the effect that Saturn Canada only sold 18,000 cars in 2008...Considering that Saturn didn't have any cars besides the Astra TO sell in 2008 that's not too bad, in MHO.
Saturn was never known as the local luxury SUV store, it was also not a place where one would expect to buy a minivan...What it was is a friendly place where people actually wanted to help you get into a well-built, decent quality car that would last, was economical to drive and didn't cost a fortune to own. I really miss the old days... RIP Saturn, it was a heck of a ride!

Saturn should not go on with out GM or with out a factory. Saturn will die a slow death with Penske. GM should keep or just let Saturn Die! Saturn would the FIRST AMERICAN CAR COMPANY to become an import! The Asian car makers must be "LOL"ing since saturn was the American answer to compet with them and now has become one of them!

Saturn has been without a factory since the last ION rolled off the line in Spring 2007.
GM did it's best to ignore whatever lessons it night heave learned from the billions of dollars Saturn cost them. That's good management ?

Penske can't take over soon enough.

Asian car makers have been LOL-ing since GM made it's first comment about "driving the Japanese back into the sea" in the early 80s.

Since GM is now mostly owned by the American People, I don't think your government would tolerate that. I'm guessing that Saturn as a whole is worth more the way it currently is as an intact division than carving it up and selling bits and pieces over several years.
