Post Double Fatal in a SL2

It was a 35 zone. Me thinks they were going a tad faster than that.

Crash scene

The car, a Saturn, was headed east just after midnight when the driver lost control, Palm Beach County Sheriff's dispatchers report this morning. Two men are dead and two others injured after the car they were in slammed into a utility pole on 6th Avenue South just west of the interstate.

Though the crash happened around midnight, the eastbound stretch of road where it happened did not open until early this morning.

The car, believed to be a Saturn sedan, was headed east just after midnight when the driver lost control, Palm Beach County Sheriff's dispatchers report this morning.

The car's driver and one back seat passenger survived and have been taken to Delray Medical Center.

One passenger in the front seat and one in the back seat, however, died at the scene, according to Sheriff's traffic homicide investigator Sgt. John Churchill.

While westbound 6th Avenue opened overnight, eastbound lanes remain closed into the early morning before being opened.

Sheriff's office spokeswoman Teri Barbera said the victims appear to be foreign nationals. Investigators are working to identify the victims through fingerprints, she said.

My wife rear-ended a mid-70's Ford full size pickup in a 93 SL1. Don't know how fast she was going, but it was a 45 mph zone, and the car looked a whole lot better than that (still totaled, though ). She walked away, a little shaken, but uninjured. So, I would agree that they were going a tad faster than 35.

Top picture shows a steel rim on the driver side front, while other pictures show aluminum wheels on the rest. Hard to tell but is the one steel rim a mini-spare?

Doesn't look like a mini-spare to me. Looks like a full size tire on a steel rim.

Judging by the occupants and its use, I'd surmise that it wasn't the original owner or very well cared for...

Odd, but the driver survived and a back seat passenger died at the scene. I am suprised that any one survived at all. What a mess.

Talk about the guilt some is going to have to live with. Jail time, Piney? This is you neck of the woods (swamp or whatever).

It isn't the speed that kills, it's the sudden stop. Injury/death occur when there's a severe change in delta V - basically a change of velocity over time.
A person wearing a seat belt is slowed down along with the car. There is some give in the seat belt-it stretches (which is why you always want to replace the seat belt after an accident). An airbag helps slow the body even more. The car design with the way the frame folds is still part of this whole process and helps the body slow down even more.

Maybe some of you can better relate to the term G-Force.

But when someone doesn't wear a seat belt their delta v occurs when the leave their seat and hit and go through the windshield and hit the road or tree. That sudden stop is what kills and injures them.

In 1998 I hit the drivers side quarter of a Suburban that made an illegal u-turn from the right (as in side not correct) lane in front of me in my 1994 SL2. I hit them at about 45 mph and didnt do near as much damage as that. They had to been haulin' balls to do that much damage.
