Dizzy Radio wires from hell

Hi guys,

i own a 01 SC2 and i love it, never given me problems (other then the check engine light)

I just purchased a system for my car and hope to be installing it today. In order to do that i need a wiring diagram for the car. I have looked all over online to find something that really is wierd to me, every diagram i see shows different colored wires than the ones actually attached to my radio!.

here is an example of a diagram i have found online
2001 Saturn SC2 Car Stereo Radio Wiring Diagram

Radio Constant 12V+ Wire: Orange
Radio Ignition Switched 12V+ Wire: Yellow
Radio Ground Wire: Black
Radio Illumination Dimmer Wire: Brown
Radio Antenna Trigger Wire: N/A
Radio Amplifier Trigger Wire: N/A
Front Speakers Size: N/A
Front Speakers Location: N/A
Left Front Speaker Wire (+): Tan
Left Front Speaker Wire (-): Gray
Right Front Speaker Wire (+): Light Green
Right Front Speaker Wire (-): Dark Green
Rear Speakers Size: N/A
Rear Speakers Location: N/A
Left Rear Speaker Wire (+): Brown
Left Rear Speaker Wire (-): Yellow
Right Rear Speaker Wire (+): Dark Blue
Right Rear Speaker Wire (-): Light Blue

this diagram is showing 11 wires when i have 14 wires, WHAT THE F*&K!

another problem is that i don't have blue or tan wires, i have 2 purple and 1 white wire. I really don't want to start hooking up the harness only to find that i need to do it 100 times to get it right.

if anyone else has had this problem let me know how u got through it!

...
bewbies!

Wrench Re: Radio wires from hell

purchase a Saturn Receiver Wire Harness like this one from Crutchfield.

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1207020...s.html?tp=2977

This harness has three different red 12V switched wires. You'll need to connect only one, which is determined by your vehicle model and series. The included instructions will help you identify which one to use.

12V constant power
12V switched power
chassis ground
power antenna turn-on
illumination
dimmer
left front speaker +/-
right front speaker +/-
left rear speaker +/-
right rear speaker +/-
.

The aftermarket radios/harnesses use a different, standardized wire color scheme. For example, the negative lead on the FR speaker will always be grey with a black stripe on any aftermarket deck or harness you look at.

Automobile manufacturers on the other hand can use whatever they want with regard to colors.

There are harnesses available to allow you to install a radio without hacking your OE radio harness. Hopefully you haven't hacked yours up.

I have attached a wiring diagram applicable to all 2000-2002 S-Series Saturns which should help you out.

+1 on DO NOT CUT THE CAR HARNESS and just splice!

If your new head unit did come with an adapter just go to Wally-mart and get the GM adapter (~$8) in the auto car stereo section. It will come with the antenna adapter you also need as well. With the adapter there will be a chart that cross references the actual connector pin-out to what the car harness is expecting. And, no, the colors definitely won't match! There will most likely be extra unused wires on the new radio (power antenna, remote etc..varies by model). Solder/shrink the adapter to the new radio wiring. From there it's literally just plug and play.

I did as the others say, relatively recently too, so its fresh in my memory.
Just used the adapter that you can buy from any car audio shop, and soldered the color coded wires all together. Took me maybe an hour to do the whole thing, and pretty nicely too.

This thread was an immense help. Thanks everyone. I bought this adapter for less than 5.00 with shipping: this is the item number on ebay it won't let me post links until after 15 posts but this very well may be my last post lol: 19068290936

I just buy from Crutchfield, where you get the harness adapter and dash cutout adapter thingy for free, and free shipping for any order of a decent or better head unit.

Default Re: Radio wires from hell

I know this is an old thread, but it refers to a NEW problem of mine. Maybe one of you can help....

2002 SL1

I have all of the wires correctly connected except for two of them now.

My "Pioneer" wiring harness still needs to have the Red ACC connection with my Saturn harness and also the Orange/White Illumination connection with my Saturn harness.

I am not going to buy a separate connector now that I have gotten everything wired other than these two wires but here is my dilemma....Hours of searching for answers have not yet answered my question...

I have only two wires left to connect for my Pioneer brand stereo, but I have 5 remaining wires on my Saturn harness.

One (1) remaining wire for the Pioneer harness is Red
One (1) remaining wire for the Pioneer harness is Orange/White

Three (3) remaining wires for the Saturn harness are Red - Red/White - Red/Black

Two (2) remaining wires for the Saturn harness are Orange - Orange/Black

Everything I have read (including this thread) says "This harness has three different red 12V switched wires. You'll need to connect only one, which is determined by your vehicle model and series"

WHERE DO I FIND WHICH OF THESE RED COLORED WIRES I NEED TO USE, AND WHICH TWO I WILL NOT USE?!?!

The Illumination wire on the Pioneer harness is Orange/White and the Saturn harness has a solid Orange and also an Orange/Black wire?

You are not going to use all of the wires on the aftermarket adapter harness because it is made to be used with a few different models including 2000-2002 S-Series, 2000-2005 L-Series, 2002-2003 Vue, and 2003 Ion. The exact wires you will use vary slightly depending on the which vehicle you have. If you purchased a Metra harness, it should have included some documentation that clears this up. If your harness isn't from Metra, to cut costs they probably left it up to you to figure out which wires you need to use. The diagram I attached in post three should help. Pay attention to the location of the wires in the plug rather relying on matching colors.

Well regardless of YMM of vehicle, there's one wire I don't recommend using on the harness:

the yellow one (constant hot).

should be on its own fused line IMHO. ran directly to the radio's connector (the end that goes into the radio).
