A new feeditems entry has been added:

GM Says its Learned from Mistakes Made with Saturn Advertising

Quote:
Alisa Priddle from the Detroit News: Lutz is convinced advertising is the key. He compared the dismal sales of the critically acclaimed Saturn Aura, which was named North American Car of the Year, to the sales success of the Chevrolet Malibu, also a Car of the Year winner. The difference: GM spent more than $100 million to advertise the Malibu, 10 times what it spent on the Aura, Lutz said.

So... I read this: "GM Says its Learned from Mistakes Made with Saturn" and LOL. Did they? Really? Why is Saturn an orphan if GM learned anything? Blaming advertising? C'mon. What about the product? and the cannibalizing from other divisions?

Blaming advertising....how convienient...

By the time the S-Series had run it's course, those who owned S-Series cars moved onto bigger vehicles, whether they were GM, Saturn or something else..

Simply taking the easy way out and saying "Advertising" was to blame for poor sales...Please.

Bob Lutz....seriously, retire already. Your thought motivation is outdated, as is the rest of the group running GM into the ground.

Well, advertising DOES play a huge part in selling cars. Thats how I found out about the Astra, I saw a commercial (or I should say, I saw the ONE commercial).

Either way, GM just didn't care enough to advertise Saturn as a whole because they didn't care enough about a great brand.

Bingo! With the "right" advertising you can sell ice cubes to eskimos. I agree 1000% GM had the best Saturn line up to date, and the let it die by not putting enough dollars into advertising.

GM still did not learn there lesson quit yet, they still think that competing the GM brands against each other is the way to do business, instead of competing with the Imports.. GM will never learn.... LOSERS!!!!!

Their admission of poorly handling their brands should be grounds for their immediate removal from their precious CEO positions. I can't remember which GM executive said "Gone are the days when we put out 15 models and hope five of them are hits." - if that has been their business model for the last 40 years no wonder why GM's empire has collapsed.

Now that the government is involved with GM, I think, as a taxpayer, the government should make MANDATORY DRUG TESTING on all GM CEOs and upper management. As a taxpayer, I want assurance that GM decision makers are using my tax dollar wisely. And I want assurance that GM executives are not spending taxpayer dollars in Nevada no matter how legal casinos and brothels are. I also want assurance that they are prohibited from opening offshore bank accounts.

GM and Saturn remind me of that great scene from "ON THE WATERFRONT"
where Marlon Brando rips his crooked brother for not taking care of him and says "I could have been somebody - I could have been a contender."

Really? Which EPA test confirms the 100mpg number? The most recent draft did confirm the 230mpg number, that's why they released it. They didn't just pull that number out of their ass. They ran the test and published the result, like any other EPA test.

Your "assurance" comes from the 10 members of the Board of Directors appointed by the Treasury. If you think a great deal of money is being spent in casinos, brothels, and off-shore bank accounts... wow, yeah, drug testing should be in your future as well.
