Dizzy Can someone help w/ my 92 saturn sl 1 and diagnostic codes?!

Ok, I'll try to explain the problem as best I can. I have a 1992 Saturn SL 1. I absolutely love my little car but we are having some problems. Sometimes I'll be driving and stop at a stop sign/light and it will start to idle very high (like it wants to go on it's own). I'll turn it off and restart it then it's fine. Other times I'll be driving and it'll just die on the spot and won't start up again. Then I can be driving like 25-35mph and it jerks. I don't know what's going on. My brother in law came over and did a scan I believe is what it's called and got 5 codes...19, 26, 41, 45, and 48. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here are the "breakdowns" for the codes

19: (1991 Perf (LLO), 1992-1994 Vehicles) 6X Signal Fault (Crankshaft Position Sensor)
26: Quad Driver Output Fault
41: Ignition Control (IC) Circuit - Open or Shorted
45: Rich Oxygen Sensor Signal
48: Reference Input - Intermittent or Noisy

The codes 19 and 48 have to do with the crankshaft position sensor. This will cause the issue you are having with the car not starting or shutting off when warm.

The high idle that is corrected by shutting the car off is a textbook example of a bad Throttle Position Sensor.

Obviously the code 45 is a bad O2 sensor.

I am not exactly sure what the "quad driver" fault is.

Also, I am not sure what exactly the code 41 signifies.

If you want to check for yourself, this website: http://www.saturnwiki.net/index.php/..._Trouble_Codes has all the info about how to find and diagnose the codes you are getting.

What is the maintenance history on this car and how many miles does it have as this may also help diagnose some of your problems.

Hope this helps!

The PCM provides the EST signal. The DIS module uses this signal to fire the ignition coils, this is EST mode (bypass line high). In bypass mode, (bypass line low) the DIS module will ground the EST line and generate an internal signal to fire the ignition coils. The DIS module has the ability to force the bypass line low in the event of missing EST pulses. The PCM monitors the state of the EST line while cranking and running.

Code Parameters

Code 41 will set if:
The EST circuit is open.
The EST circuit is shorted to ground or voltage.

Beg to differ on that.

The code 45 is most likely caused by a bad PCM coolant temp sensor. O2 sensor is likely just the messanger not the cause.
High idle is also possibly caused by the temp sensor.

Did your brother in-law use a scanner or just the paper clip trick?

On OBD-1 cars (1991-1994) you can use a Paper Clip to Jump the A/B Terminals in the ALDL connector (next to driver's knee)

From there it is watching the SES Light Flash.

The car will flash Code 12 (Entering Diagnostic Code) 3 Times
One Long Flash, Two Short Flashes

Then your codes will follow

Then the car will flash Code 12 (3 Times again)

You put the paper clip in, then turn your car to the Accessory position, but DON'T START the car...you just watch the SES Light.

Replace your ECTS (Coolant Temp Sensor). It is on the driver's side of the engine block, underneath the EGR Valve. It is the 2 wire sensor that is taken out with a 13MM Deep Socket. $15 part at the dealer or your local auto parts store.

Code 26 could be due to burnt out lamps in the IP Cluster. Also, do your mouse belts still work?

Fix the ECTS first...everything else will follow.

I'm using the paper clip trick to check what my intermittent check engine light means. I understand 12 is normal which means 1 long light 2 short light flash but where is a chart for the rest? I found one for Cadillac will it be the same see below for partial list.

Thanks in advance Linda

12 System normal
13 oxygen sensor circuit open
14 coolant sensor high resistance or shorted
15 coolant sensor circuit low or open
16 direct ignition system (DIS) fault in circuit
17 cam position sensor fault
18 crank or cam sensor error
19 crank sensor circuit fault
21 tps sensor out of range
22 tps sensor signal voltage low
23 intake air temp sensor out of range, low
24 vehicle speed (vss) sensor circuit fault
25 air temp sensor sensor out of range, high
26 quad-driver module (computer) circuit #1 fault
27 quad-driver module (computer) 2nd gear circuit
28 quad-driver module (computer) circuit #2 fault
29 quad driver module (computer) 4th gear circuit
31 cam position sensor fault
32 egr circuit fault
