A new feeditems entry has been added:

Cancelled Saturn Vue Two-Mode Hybrid Rated at 28 MPG by EPA

Quote:
Colin Bird from Cars.com: Remember the Saturn Vue Two-Mode Hybrid? If you don't, you'll never know it, as this Saturn Vue model will never go on sale. The vehicle was so close to launch that the EPA even tested it: The Vue Two-Mode would have received a 27/30 mpg city/highway, 28 mpg combined rating.

That program was code named 'X25' and yes it has been officially cancelled by GM. The things leaned from the X25 are now being put into the launch of the 'X30' program (the Chevy Volt). I know because we work(ed) on both projects.

Lots of issues though....

The mpg does not sound that good (compared to a Ford Escape).

The MPG doesn't sound good even compared to my Green Line single mode!

Oh well. No big loss for Saturn. I sure hope, for GM's sake, that the Volt succeeds. For a company their size to have no real hybrids this late in the game is pretty astonishing.

(For a list of "real" hybrids, see http://www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/c...pecialfuel.asp - not a single GM vehicle listed there.)

That's because the Ford Escape Hybrid is down 100 hp compared to the VUE 2-mode. Remember, the conventional VUE V6 (FWD) is rated at 17/24 mpg, so this represents a VERY large increase in fuel economy. Too bad it won't see the light of day.

Yup, it's got about the same mileage as the BAS Vue, but goes 0-60 in 7.3 seconds. That's quite a bit faster than the BAS Vue and Escape Hybrid. I think the Two Mode was aimed more at people who don't want to sacrifice performance for mileage and are willing to pay for it.

Highway mileage is disappointing... We can get close to that with out Honda V6's with a lot less complexity.

City mileage is good.

If they could lost the extra 500+ pounds the 2008 chassis gained all the mileage numbers would have rose.

I wonder how much this VUE weighed? With the batteries and the more complex power train, this beast has to be close to 5000 pounds...

You really have to think about it. The regular 4 cylinder gets decent gas mileage and the hybrid is supposed to get better because it shuts off the motor at lights etc..... but then, you have to factor in the weight of the batteries and electric motor that the regular one doesn't have to lug around. Plus the money you save in gas, you have to spend to get the batteries replaced, there isn't a real amount in savings in the long run. You don't see a lot of the first gen Prius going around anymore because the cost of the battery pack replacement is more then the vehicle's total worth and the same thing will happen with the VUE 10 years from now.

I get between 21 and 28 highway miles with my V6 awd VUE.

I guess what I'm trying to say is: do you really save money in the long run owning a hybrid?

Remember, there's a significant difference in the cost of the VUE GL's battery and the Prius's battery. The Prius battery is 300 V, IIRC, and the VUE's is 36 V. The 2-mode, on the other hand, is similar to the Prius battery.

It's a trade-off, to be sure, but the hybrid nearest to economic "recovery" is the BAS system since it's so cheap to begin with.

We haven't seen 28 mpg since the winter. We've never seen below 30 mpg on the highway.
