2004 VUE 2.2L
Default 2500 mile road trip

On Thursday morning, June 4th, we rolled out of the driveway at 4am to begin our first road trip as a family of 4. My wife and I have taken our 3.5 year old on a couple <6 hour road trips before when she was younger. But this was her first BIG road trip and first road trip period for our 2 year old. They each had some portable DVD players and we downloaded tons of kid shows to keep them occupied. And they also had table-like things to go over their car seats so they could color.

11 days, 7 states, 2500 miles.

Here's the intended routed HERE.

This link does not include out side trip to Wisconsin Dells.

The purpose of this trip was to visit family and friends scattered throughout the midwest before it got too hot and muggy.
Day ONE: Highlands Ranch, CO to Wichita, KS.
Day TWO: Wichita, KS to Des Moines, IA (Johnston really).
Day FIVE: Des Moines, IA to La Crosse, WI.
Day EIGHT: La Crosse, WI to Apple Valley, MN (suburb of Minneapolis)
Day NINE: Apple Valley to Omaha, NE (or possible Lincoln, NE)
Day ELEVEN: Omaha, NE to Highlands Ranch, CO.

The VUE was loaded up for our trip. It's a good thing that the girls aren't any bigger than they are- the VUE isn't really all that big. Even with my Thule rooftop cargo box, the interior was pretty cramped. We were very glad to get out of the VUE. IMO, the VUE really isn't all that comfortable- especially for nearly 40 hours of driving.

Gas fill ups were as follows:

Date Driving Time Place Miles Gallons MPG

6/4 4:56 Hays, KS 373.6 14.546 25.663
6/5 9:00 KS turnpike 271 11.356 23.864
6/8 14:29 Johnston, IA 350 14.53 24.01
6/10 18:50 LaCrosse, WI 290.3 12.924 22.462
6/12 25:15 Lakeville, MN 360.1 13.105 27.478
6/13 30:33 I-80, exit 23, IA 337 13.747 24.514
6/14 35:37 North Platte, NE 316.9 13.777 23.002
6/14 39:33 HOME 304.9 13.425 22.711

Here's the GPS log of the trip:

My VUE as equiped on the trip (the one in the foreground):

Next spring, we are probably going to get a minivan because the VUE is too small. I'll keep the VUE since I don't haul the kids that much. The van that I'm most likely going to get is the Honda Odyssey. It's much larger and should be much more comfortable for a trip of this magnitude.

...
Not a Saturn.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!
