Roger Penske: Next Step is to Build a Saturn Team

Quote:
Seth Livingstone from USA Today quotes Mr. Penske as saying: The next step is to close the transaction, which we hope to do at the end of the third quarter. We'll be dealing with GM on future product. Then we have the opportunity to source product from around the world as we go into future years. First, we're putting an organization together and closing the transaction. The great news is that we have 350 dealerships that will be alive and well and will not have to be shut down. I think that's a real by-product of this. For me personally, I know many of these dealers myself and they're some of the very best.

Penske's quote: "To me, this is an opportunity to do something for the country, but, more importantly for all the people that work at Saturn...."

Let's hope that means building future Saturn vehicles in the good old USA after the GM deal is over. Perhaps the UAW will work with Penske to see that it happens. They know he will be shopping overseas for a manufacturer.

How would that help Saturn? Saturn HAS no manufacturing employees anymore. They dont even have factories, GM merged all of that into GM proper, and that was not for sell in this deal.

The only people Saturn has left are the dealerships now, and thats who Penske's talking about.

How do we know Penske didn't get the factory? Is there a link we can go to so we can read what this deal involves?

What FACTORIES? There are no stand alone Saturn plants, and Penske will not want to pay UAW wages. The Vue is made in Mexico now look for that trend to continue.

Just think back two years. In 2007 did you think that GM would be bankrupt? That Saturn would be sold?

Penske has said GM will be building Saturn vehicles for the next two years--that keeps some American workers employed.

At this point, I'm certainly positive about Penske buying the Saturn brand rather than a foreign company. Hopefully he can build most of the post 2011 Saturns in the good old USA.

Unless a plant was included in the deal I don't think where they are manufactured is relevent. GM has nothing to do with Saturn now and Penske has to increase traffic at the dealers with good value cars people will buy because thats what he owns and operates. If they're going to build anything in the US keep the UAW away please.

The man knows all about hauling stuff and racing cars. Two opposite ends of the spectrum. I think that a lot of people are hoping that he will revive the industry of auto making, and not just resort to selling and distributing cars that are made outside the U.S. And why not do something bold that's imaginative as well realistic?

Yes, and people called me overly pessimistic!

No, I thought it would simply be shut down. I am surprised that it was sold.
