Default Idle accelerates on its own

Hi Helpers,

I have a 2002 SL2 manual 5 speed with around 100,000 miles. My car has a problem idling. Everyday at various times the car will jump to an idle of around 1700 RPM's. The only way to get it down is to shut the car off and restart it. The engine light never comes on and I have an OBDII reader which reads no errors either. I haven't tried anything yet to fix it except to changes the plugs, wires, and air filter. Does anyone have any suggestions??? Thanks in advance

I was getting an elevated idle like that before I cleaned my EGR valve. But I was getting a code thrown too.

With the car running, open the hood & locate the Throttle Position Sensor or TPS, Tap on it lightly with the handle of a screw driver or similar, if the idle changes, you need a new TPS, I went through 4 of them in my 2001 SL1 & when they go bad, they don't always throw a code.

In the same throttle body assembly as the throttle position sensor is the idle air control valve. Check that out too.

TPS is the more likely suspect. The signal is read by the PCM "relatively", so when you shut it off and re-start it, it's like re-booting Windoze; the PCM gets a fresh signal and everything returns to normal, for a while. Classic bad TPS symptom.
