Default Manufacturing Plants Included in the Deal?

A new story entry has been added:

Manufacturing Plants Included in the Deal?

Quote:
In a morning press conference, GM's President and CEO, Fritz Henderson, updated the media on the state of the financially tapped company. He also added another interesting twist to the ongoing Saturn saga. According to Consumer Reports, "Henderson said GM would entertain offers on Saturn manufacturing plants and models in addition to the dealer and distribution network."

It would be interesting for the new Saturn to buy Spring Hill, and the Wilmington plants and sell cars to GM...

Get back the 99 people that created the original Saturn as consultants and pull it off again for good...

That is not as far fetched as one would think. This has been done before. Excluding WWII.

Nash/AMC/Rambler. In the early 1950's Nash came out with a small car called the Nash Rambler American. Car was discontinued. In the late 1950's AMC came out with the Rambler American. The same car. You see, AMC has saved the tooling for the small Nash Rambler American.

So it has been done.

But I don't think any of the tooling for any of the older S series is left. Or is it?

If I'm not mistaken Fritz did not bring up the "Sky-Solstice" plant in the context of a possible Saturn sale. It came up as something GM might sell as a niche product & plant to any interested party. Of course all of this talk may change on June 1st when (as most believe) GM will pull the chapter 11 plug.

This is not a bad thing. Liquidation of the assets could make it more likely a services oriented company like Penske could diversify into manufacturing.

I was Penske I would snatch up Willington and Spring Hill as manufacturing facilities, ignite the second stage rocket of Saturn and start selling both electric and ICE versions of the kappa. (AMP has a good idea why not buy them while you are at it.)
Then sell only the ICE version back to GM to replace the Pontiac Solstice in exchange for product engineering support for a few years.

OK so that's just a little Saturncentric on my part, but it's worth dreaming.

New car dealership w/o a new car product is big nothing. Buying a running factory would be a dream come true. I am not all that thrilled with the Wilmington plant, but and empty factory, ala a vacant spring hill, would be a bad idea. I love the thought of owning Spring hill, but...

The Sky's platform has a huge potential! But what we need first is a bread and butter, everyone likes it, 4dr, smallish car. Get back to basics.
