Default BCM Got Me Too

I have a 2002 L100, and the other day the odometer jumped from 65,000 to 693,000 miles and the Security light came on. Naturally I went to a Saturn dealership to have it looked at. They told me I had a bad BCM. The extended warranty will cover the part and labor...usually...except when they can't get the correct mileage. The insurance company claims that there should be another way to get the mileage off the car, they suggested through the ECM or instrument cluster(which, as I've read on this forum, doesn't store mileage). The service department claims there is no other possible way to get the mileage off the car (but I don't really trust them, I've had issues with their service in the past). So who is right? Is there any way to get the mileage off the car?

Thanks.

Mileage isn't anywhere but recorded in the BCM. In NYS, my registration sticker has the mileage printed the day of the state inspection. That mileage is taken from the odometer. I would guess that NYS has records of every inspection for my car and the mileage recorded for each inspection. Using the data should average out to mileage between each inspection and would be an approximation for current mileage when another inspection is made if my BCM scrambled and a ridiculous mileage is displayed.

So much for extended warranty. This will be interesting to see how Saturn reacts. This claim all hinges on the mileage. There are several ways of confirming approximit mileage...... oil change, new tires, emmisions test...etc. Keep us updated.

This happened to my sisters 2003 l200. Went form 42,000 miles to 578,000 miles. Dealer had to take her word on the mileage, as there was no way to pull the correct mileage once the BCM flakes out. My sister filed a complaint with the NHSTA on the matter, as anything that effects odometer readings has to be covered until the vehicle is exempt from odometer readings in the state it is titled in.

So far GM seems to be dodgeing the issue because not all BCM failures effect odometer readings.

When my BCM went it stopped recording mileage. I probably lost about 15k or so in the year it took us to fix it. However, the used engine I had to swap in after the timing chain broke on the original had about 5k less on it than what the odometer read so I figured it all evened out.
