UAW Worries About GM Plant in Spring Hill

Quote:
Associated Press from Forbes: Auto industry analysts suggest General Motors' Spring Hill plant could become vulnerable as the Obama administration makes steeper demands in return for federal financial support, and workers say they are nervous. President Barack Obama had said GM's initial plans to become viable didn't go far enough.

I hear its only operating at 24% copacity now anyway, so let it go with Saturn and they can build cars there again--who knows, maby they can build a new polymer skinned car as part of the lineup!

They'd probably be doing better building fuel efficient small cars than yet another SUV in a market that's saturated with SUV's!

AMEN BROTHER!

Stupid GM.

As the previous poster said, GOOD, they can give it back to Saturn when they spin away from the dead mothership.

Everyone is worried of the unknown, but I believe the Spring Hill plant will be OK.

It would be pretty foolish to shudder a more modern & efficient plant like SH instead of an older one.

That plant will be one of the last GM plants standing, they knew what was going to happen when they took Sature out of there. The Traverse won't be built there past 2011 and plans are already in the works to build a V6 there in powertrain for the next product built in Spring Hill.
ps, rumor has it the Corvette could be move there from Bowling Green.

red96, I've heard Chevy Traverse production will eventually transfer to Lansing Delta Township (LDT) as well.

Spring Hill isn't fully amortized and is the second newest in GM North American manufacturing facilities. Neither is LDT, which was built two years ago. The only way either plant is leaving GM's portfolio is through bankruptcy protection, and even then they are not likely to be deemed 'bad' assets.

Seeing as it is one of the few North American plants producing the Ecotec engines I don't see anything happening.

That's what they build now at Spring Hill, and an ugly one at that. Should still be building Saturns there, but alas, GM was too stupid to keep a good thing going...

The products that Saturn built there were great but Saturn had a open check book and no one was watching the bottom line. The waste that was there in every part of the process was crazy. It made AIG look like a cost conscience company. GM doesn't know how to build a profitable small car that the buyers want. GM has spent the last 15 year building what the customer want and that was big SUV and pick-up. Even today the big trucks are still out sell the smaller gas friendly car. I don't know what the answer is, maybe GM ISN'T WORTH SAVING.

Since
'Saturn' will be sourcing cars we may find just about any shuttered GM, Ford or Chrysler factory reopened to build cars to specification. For that matter excess capacity at a Honda, Toyota or Kia plant could be all the capacity the new Saturn would need...
