Default need a sixth gear

as a current owner of a 2002 l200 manual, i notice that the 2.2 ecotec engine seems like it needs a sixth gear. my previous car, a 96 sl2 manual, turned less than 3 grand when running around 70 mph. however, the l200 seems to run much higher (200-300 rpm) at that speed. i always thought that the larger motor would would turn slower at any given speed (vehicle) compared to the smaller displacement engine. does anyone know why saturn engineered it this way? was it because of the fact that the had few SAAb trannys that would come close to doing the job, or is it for other reasons. would like some insight on this

the L is about 600 lbs heavier than the S. the bigger 2.2L could be geared to turn slower than the 1.9L if it was installed in the S. a better comparison would be between the gearing used with the 3.0L in the L compared to the 2.2L in the L.

The problem with deep automatic overdrives in engines that don't make mountains of torque is that they are only useful on the flatest of flat roads where you are entirely in the cruise mode (no accelerating, fighting headwinds, gentile rises in the terrain, other traffic). Otherwise, the trans will be hunting between gears, which will drive you crazy. Even with a manual, you would constantly be rowing gears. It would be almost useless.

FYI, The auto V6 revs lower than the 2.2L (i think both manual and auto?) at highway speeds. 2000 rpm at 60 and 2200 at 70.

D'oh. forgot they don't have a manual equipped 3.0 in the L. only automagics. my point was to compare the gearing in a manual 3.0 to a manual 2.2 L.

Yeah, I love my 3.0 with the Auto. But I would love to see a 6 speed, with an aggressive shifting ratio. Say a 1.0 5th, and a .82 6th... and start it out around 4.1 for the 1st *drools*

That would be so fun

Great News!
There is a 6 speed gear kit for the L200 Manual. Any ECOTEC with the F25 Transmission can purchase a 6 speed gear kit from Quaife. This is limited to the SAAB 9-3 and Saturn L series with the F25.
Sorry not the GETRAG in the ION.

It's $3875 for the complete gear kit and it comes with an LSD also.Quaife USA SAA (GM F25) Gear Kit

my point was to compare the gearing in a manual 1.9 to a manual 2.2 L. (not the 3.0l v6)

$4,000 + labor to lower your RPM's a few hundred? Are you out of your mind?

The L-series and VUE both rev higher in the 5-speed models than in the automatics. In fact, you'll notice the L200 Auto gets higher MPG because of this. However, this is done for a reason. It allows the engine to turn at it's sweet spot on the highway so when you give the car gas in 5th, it actually moves. The downside is the noise level coming through the firewall. It's a trade-off. But spending upwards of $4g's to add another gear.....? Why not just trade it in on another car?
