Default 1998 SL1 serpentine belt tensioner replacement

my girlriends car just started squealing a bit, I popped the hood and there some slack in the belt, so I dont know yet if its just the belt being old/stretched and its probably the original (the car has 88,000km on it, it was my moms for 10 years, hardly drove it)

I have yet to throw a wrench on the tensioner to see if it still in fact is putting tension on the belt, if it turns out that it is the tensioner, how hard is it to replace? Is there a how to thread here for it? Im new and havent got the navigation down yet

thanks, cheers

If the belt is slack then its definitely the tensioner and probably the idler bearing also. The belt will break but it does not "stretch".

Welcome!
I haven't done my tensioner yet. There are many threads on the process, including a lot about where to get the replacement unit. (that's the part I'm stuck on - which unit is built the best).

On the main s-tech page you can do a forum search. And go to the bottom of the page to Forum Jump and check out the How To.

And do it right as OldNuc infers by replacing the tensioner, idler pulley and serpentine belt.

ya im going to replace the entire unit, the tensioner comes with a new idler pulley, cost about 130 CAD with a new belt

The tensioner comes with its pulley and ther is a separate idler pulley on the timing cover, right on the vertical center line. It is a good idea to replace it also.
