Press Release: GM Presents U.S. Government Updated Plan for a Viable, Sustainable Company

Quote:
GM today presented the United States Department of Treasury with an updated plan that boldly responds to the weaker global auto market conditions and details the company's long term viability. The plan, which provides a comprehensive review of key aspects of GM's restructuring, is the first of two status reports required by the loan agreement signed by GM and the U.S.

Dazed Re: Press Release: GM Presents U.S. Government Updated Plan for a Viable, Sustainable

So, if I understand well, the Saturn brand will die if nobody raise his hand to propose a spin-off or to buy the company. In other words, instead of officially putting the key in the door, the Saturn brand will be let by itself until it dies.

Imagine what that means for a consumer... GM tells you that you can buy the car, but if nothing is done, in a few years, your car will worth almost nothing because the brand will not exist anymore. Would you buy the car? Unless you are very addicted to the brand, I think the answer is clear...

Imagine what it means for the dealership... If a potential client enters the showroom, forget about the "no-pressure" politic... "Please!!! Buy the car!!! I have three kids to feed!!!"

I think GM is trying to keep what little confidence the dealers and potential Saturn customers have alive. By absolutely killing off Saturn today, they would reduce whatever margins are left in the cars as they lanquish on clearance lots.

It was real nice of GM to give the Saturn dealerships the head's up on this plan....a bit sarcastic but this shouldn't have been announced on the news prior to talking to Saturn dealerships.

I am disgusted with the apparent decision to eliminate the Saturn brand by GM. I can understand that GM needs to streamline their line-up however to hold onto Buick which is a brand who's customer base is a dying breed...and to walk away from Saturn which is the only GM brand that truly competes with the foreign market and appeals to the younger buyer is a big mistake.

They should have left Saturn with the Spring Hill factory and given them a line-up that wasn't shared by other GM brands. The Saturn philosophy is one that is unmatched by any other brand. It is a concept that is needed in the automobile industry and could thrive if given a chance.

In part I agree. Differentiation is the key. Springhill was easy to call Saturn's Mecca. But after what 17 years, how much longer do you give Saturn to be profitable?
