Thank goodness. And replacing himself with an insider. Ugh...GM really needs new blood.

Oh great. This news is as refreshing as learning that Fidel Castro will be replaced by his brother. Well, my fingers are crossed that whoever it is they are capable of doing a better job and of being a much better PR person.

Maybe we can convince Raul to take Lutz's job? I can't get much worse.

Hmm..

Lutz retiring....Volt release has been pushed back a few times....GM in dire straits...Lutz calls Global warming a crock of Sh%t!....

I think that Lutz is getting out now while he can because he probably knows that the launch of the Volt will probably be marred by.....[Insert GM Problem here]....pissing off alot of White Collar workers who lined up back in 2007 to buy a "Plug In car" at $40K a pop.

He'll probably go retire to his "Big Ranch" in Montana, Texas, or Wyoming where he owns 100s of Acres to take care of a bunch of horses while he drives around in an oversized GMC Pickup...all the while spewing out the "Fake CO2 Gases" (Remember...according to Lutz.."Global Warming is a Crock of S**t!")

Good riddence Lutz...hopefully Wagoner pulls his head out of his ass and joins him on the Ranch.

There needs to be an "In-company-GM Style Coup" where the people that are on the board currently overtake Wagoner and Lutz and their counterparts and right the wrongs that have plagued GM for years.

Wishful thinking I know....

Well, there goes the chances of any new good cars coming out from GM. Might as well just change the company's name to Geo, since they're only going to be producing piece of crap econo-crap from now on.

Anyone who likes RWD, RWD biased AWD, or performance, time to look elsewhere.

FWIW, Bob Lutz was also a high ranking executive at Ford, Chrysler and BMW. Like him or dislike him, he was hardly a GM lifer or someone who only knew the corporate culture of GM. Ultimately his recent tenure at GM will be judged by the results, but no one can deny that he didn't try to shake things up and that he stuck with the old GM status quo.

I sense that Lutz is doing this not because he wants to, but because he had to. I suppose if he had his druthers he would have stayed to see the Volt to fruition. If the government calls on 4/1 to pay up on that 13 billion loan, I can only imagine the hit Maximum Bob would take in his retirement package (or is it a golden parachute?) At least he gave us the Malibu, CTS, Enclave and G8 sedan, which would have made a better Impala, and I think that even Lutz had his limitations within an enterprise as balkanized as the General.

Anyway, I question the wisdom of promoting a 40-year veteran to take over the reins because it suggests a 'same-old' mindset, even though Wagoner probably did it for stability. Didn't Chris Bangle just bolt from BMW?

In the final analysis, imagine the shape GM would be in if they didn't have someone like Lutz around for 6-7 years to light a fire under some backsides from time to time?

Bottom line is GM did a lot of importing instead of building cars here. He done alot but it was niche branding that he was best at instead on changing the face of the bread and butter Impala. He should not have tried to save Saturn by bringing in imports instead of creating something here.

We are suppose to have some of the brightest here in the US but we keeping bitting off someone elses design. Hyundai maybe able to pull this off but not GM. We need to close all colleges if we here in the US cant design and build something here.

Outside of the Aura, how many GM cars resemble '90s Chryslers?

Besides, those were some of their better designs. Judging by styling, they're arguably nicer designs than some of what Chrysler has now.

Ultimately Lutz and Wagoner will be judged based on how GM fared on their watch. The poor economy is hurting lots of companies, but GM was caught completely flat footed. That screams managerial incompetence to me. Unless he wakes up one morning with an epiphany and discovers the cure for cancer in his few remaining years, Lutz is going to be remembered for his failures at the end, not for his successes in the past. That's got to be a tough thing to swallow, but I'm sure with all the multimillion dollar payouts he's gotten as he rode this company into the ground he's not going to be crying into his glass of Dom.

Cheers,

In general design...take a look at the 1984 Saturn Prototype...some say it looks like a Cavalier...others will say it looks like a bad version of a K-Car...

In any event...THANK GOD we weren't dealt that design in the S-Series...Saturn would have been gone a LONG TIME AGO.

I agree. What's really sad in all of this is that Wagoner has been with GM since 1977. Both Wagoner and Lutz should know better. It's really a shame that they have driven GM into the ground over the years.

The banks got loans too. Some of the finance companies (like Goldman Sachs) are already talking about paying the money back early because they don't like the conditions attached to the money.
