A new feeditems entry has been added:

[drupal=2883]Could Saturn be Integrated into Buick-Pontiac-GMC?[/drupal]

Quote:
From All Cars All the Time: If GM were to pair Saturn with BPG, it is my belief that Saturn would aim for smaller vehicles. Corsa, Meriva, and Astra are names that come to mind when looking over Opel's lineup. Now you might argue that the Astra hasn't done very well here in the States, however I maintain that it isn't so much the car's fault as it was a hurried, low cost effort to bring it here and a scant marketing budget once the car arrived.

It seems obvious to me that GM would have an interest in competing in a middle market that exists somewhere between Chevy and Cadillac in terms of price and vehicle design. Buick, Pontiac and Saturn all currently reach into some of that market but don't cover it adequately as single brands. I believe GM has to restructure itself to better address this market niche with one or at most two brands that are better marketed and more heavily advertised. Whether that brand or one of those brands will be called Saturn remains to be seen. It will probably be dependent on whether GM sees the Saturn brand image as something that would help it attract that level of customer.

If GM put the 2.2L or better yet, the 2.4L Ecotec in the Astra, then you'd have a real Asian import fighter.

I I know GM doesn't have the money but Saturn could be TDI diesel integration into the US market. Opel already makes the engine for these cars. I know they would have to meet california standards but this would give Saturn something new and different to offer the US buyers. Buick/Saturn would make sense. It would give Buick a small car that it could sell at a higher price than under the Saturn name itself The Outook and Aura would have go under this arrangement.

I know its not going to happen right now but Pontiac should be on the chopping block. The GMC should be integraded into Chevy or just go away

Or better yet, they could sell the diesels EVERYWHERE BUT CALIFORNIA and give California the finger. Because someone really should. VW did it once before with their diesels, more companies should make a habit of it. Maybe it'll knock some sense into those hypocrite *******s. Probably not, the movers and shakers all drive CARB and CAFE exempt Ferraris and Bentleys and Rolls-Royces.

What would be the point of carrying on the Saturn name? It'd be kind of like Geo - might as well just call it Chevy!

Some people like to haggle. People who can get good deals mainly. I wouldn't buy a new or used car from a no-haggle store. Because I know that I can get it cheaper by haggling and beating them down than I can get it from a no haggle price.

Agreed. What's the point with 4 brands consolidated into one store? Just give it one or two names at most, but 4 brands is beyond overkill and never works. Remember Chrysler-Plymouth-Jeep-Eagle?

Better yet use the Zeta RWD platform for a flagship Buick. That eliminates the Pontiac G8. Let Saturn keep the Sky. That eliminates the Pontiac Solstice, which eliminates Pontiac. I still have no idea why GM would keep GMC, since it's vehicle offerings can be easily covered by Chevrolet and Cadillac. That eliminates GMC. That leaves Saturn and Buick. To that mix I'd toss in the Hummer H4 and call it a day.

What's absolutely stupid and infuriating that we as fans and consumers can figure this out easily by just paying attention to the product lines and other people, but these million-dollar pilfering CEOs have no idea. It's disgusting. Eliminate the Brands, call it all "General Motors", eliminate the redundancies as outlined above, sell these vehicles all in one dealership, fix the mismanagement / uber-spending, fix the labor agreement some, get your butt back to work on electric cars, and WHAM! -- rock-solid company.

Ultimately GM would/should like to be just Chevy and Cadillac, I think a lot would say...but one problem is the amount of dealers. Imagine the fiasco of all those extra dealers closing. By deleting all the other brands, they'd barely have a chance of selling the existing inventory. GM has enough trouble selling some of their cars, imagine if like 4 of their brands had their resale value thrown out and consumers don't want to drive something discontinued, that they're not quite sure about getting serviced. Yeah, there still would be the GM dealers. I don't know the amounts of dealers, but imagine the amount put out of work. It's not like they'll all go to the new single brand dealer.

Importing Opel's again will be the last nail in Saturn's coffin. If it still has a coffin on Feb 17th...

The author seems to want to justify the slow sales by the fact the Astra was not Americanized...

What should have happened was Saturn should have had a re-badged Cobalt and have the SS versions in both 2 and 4 door bodies. This would sold twenty times what the Astra did, and you wouldn't have customers and car magazines whining about the weak Euro Ecotec.

I wouldn't mind seeing it happen. Of course the dealers will be pissed and GM would be dealing with lawsuits over it.

For you youngsters out there.

Nash and Hudson merged to form American Motors. The Hudson factory was dumped and the following years all Hudsons were a rebadged Nash. Nash was sold in Nash dealerships and Hudsons were sold in Hudson dealerships.

After a few years, both the Nash and the Hudson name were dumped in favor of Rambler. That name was also dumped a few years latter to become AMC.

So what's the point?
